2018 Municipal Election: Toronto Council Races

How many non-incumbent winners will there be on council?

  • Total voters
    22
  • Poll closed .
I live in Michelles ward as well. I find her to be a kiss ass whose only goal is to be powerful politically speaking. When the liberals were tanking she distanced herself from Lorenzo and the liberals and got closer to the PC party.

Here was my response on Twitter to her tweet praising Doug Ford.

Is she divorced from him? She changed to her maiden name but has now hyphenated it. I saw that someone in the media called her Lorenzo's ex. If that's the case she's obviously hyphenating it for name recognition purposes only and I expect she'll go back to her maiden name after the election.

But if you elect someone like Kessmaat, wouldn't you want a strong mayor system?

A truly strong mayor doesn't need a "system": he or she can assemble the necessary council votes without a sweat.

Of course, Mayor Crackhead was a dud at vote assembly more often than not; that's why he *needed* such a system, sort of like how a dewd with erectile dysfunction needs Viagra...

IF she wins. I think she sould lose against Crawford.

She's an absentee councilor who spends more time abroad promoting Toronto at UN conferences, summits etc than she does at City Hall.

Her Instagram is loaded with pictures from an all expenses paid conference in Istanbul. Given the current adversity towards absenteeism and taxpayer funded vacations she will likely get lynched.

I know what shes been up to this term and I dont plan on voting for her nor would I vote for Gary.

Crawford isn't well liked. I'm in a number of Facebook groups for the area and most people don't respect him, in huge contrast to Paul Ainslie in Guildwood who is very well liked. Michelle is all about herself, all her newsletters are me, me, me.

If Ulli Watkiss really intended on cooperating, her office would be doing preliminary work given Ford's public statements. She is not. I hope for this to mean that she'll do what she can to run out the clock rather than pull miracles to satisfy Ford's destruction of Toronto's democracy.

She is way too political in her responses during council meetings, and becomes malicious when a councillor with whom she disagrees asks a question she doesn't like / disagrees with. I don't understand how she has that job (with a 250k salary as per the 2017 sunshine list). It's not her job to make a decision about the way to go, it's to follow directives. And I don't agree with what Ford has done, but she's just making it harder on the City for what's to come.

He is certainly no Paul Ainslie, and I pretty much disagree with every position he takes on council. On the other hand, I do have to give him credit for being a very effective advocate for the Ward, and he does seem to care and be responsive to constituent requests. I have a feeling Berardinetti would be somewhat more left politically but would be a completely absentee councilor. Tough choice.

She actually has a LEGAL responsibility to run the elections and follow the rules - which allow her some leeway if 'things happen' - and they have. Council (and the Province) set the Rules but are not supposed to interfere once the clock starts (in this case May 1). She is NOT supposed to follow any (new) directives once things start.

It will be classic Conservative irony when these last minute changes eat up all the 'savings' from reducing council size.

I'm sure it wont' be cheap to implement Ford's plan this last minute.

The usual 2 out of 3 - Fast, good, cheap. You already have to have fast - just left with a choice between good and cheap now.

In any case, I don't even buy the argument that they care about it being cheap - this is a government that have no qualms about blowing 20M to challenge the Feds in a jurisdiction they will lose in - and they aren't the level of government paying for councillors via property tax either in this instance either, one taxpayer or not rhetoric nothwithstanding.

Ford hasn't done anything. He's said he will do something soon (and is in the process) but it's not law. The Attorney General stamp needs to be on it before Ford has actually "done" something.

And, at that point, there will likely be a court injunction which prevents it from taking effect immediately.

Doug's brother stomped all over the legal process and people got in trouble for following unlawful orders. They're not going to fall for that again.

According to Matt Elliot, as a result of the council changes, councilors have been given a one month extension to communicate to constituents on council business. Expect a lot of council mail from incumbents, trying to milk every dime on self-promotion before the election period.

It was part of the motion at Council yesterday and is really not a bad idea as it willa llow Councillors to keep constituents up to date on the latest Ford Dictatorship news.

3 - Motion to Amend Item (Additional) moved by Councillor Joe Mihevc (Carried)

That:

In the event Nomination Day is changed, City Council amend the Constituency Services and Office Budget Policy to add the following:

Notwithstanding section 5.1.1 of the Use of City Resources during an Election Period Policy, City Council shift the cut-off date for Councillor communications from August 1, 2018 to August 31, 2018 or one week prior to Nomination Day whichever is later due to the change in date of nomination day.

None of their "cost-saving" measures thus far are going to be cheap. (Carbon credit reimbursement, cancelled contracts, Hydro One CEO dismissal).
They're like people who borrow money to gamble. I mean, their rationale for all these "cost-saving" exercises thus far has been non-existent. So, basically along the lines of: "Lend me some loot, I know I'm going to win".

I mean you heard the chief: "...will result in 500,000 less pieces of paper....I'm saving the environment. I'm saving trees." What? Well thought out isn't exactly what they're going for.
