    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Temporary or interim conditions that have existed on parts of Bloor for – checks notes – 8 years? I think the first bollard "protected" cycle track pilot was back 2016. Nothing is "permanent," everything is "temporary" in that it can be undone, or done better at a later date. But if things are...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

The city's "new" ESRI-based cycling network map that replaced their old Google Maps one has been brought up a bit recently. I've been trying to make the most of it, and appreciate the work that went into building it. However there are a lot of strange things in this map, some of which I think...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I rode it yesterday and believe it ends at Resurrection Rd. (great name), so not quite to Kipling. I thought it would stop at Islington, so I was kind of stoked!

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Quick video I shot there the other day. When this many cyclists all go the wrong way, it's an issue of design. I assume more paint is going in, and possibly permanent bollards/posts instead of tippy traffic cones. But it's still not a good placement, likely due to the streetcar tracks.

I literally rode the entire Bloor West bikeway yesterday... how did I miss this? Must have gone in in the afternoon.

Toronto Star columnist Matt Elliot's take on the 2025-2027 bike plans. tl;dr he basically agrees with Rob Z about the lack of ambition or prioritizing of bike infra, and that the city is patting itself on the back for achieving middling success rates at building what they promised three years...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I didn't mean for that to be a low blow. I was just trying to paint the picture. I appreciate what you bring here, but I just feel too often the cycling community turns on ourselves. I don't want to contribute to that as well, so I apologize if I was too strident. If someone can't be...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Rob Zaichkowski is an extremely dedicated cycling activist who works in the public eye, instead of under an alias on an urbanist forum. And your take here feels quite mean-spirited, and status-quo centric. I disagree with Rob often, but "ornery and naive?" "Blissfully unaware?" I am quite sure...

    Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

That is the only such reference I could find online though. There are a few tech companies and firms named "Teamway," but no formal definitions in English language dictionaries. I guess that means it was a truly local term, or else just so arcane and dated it is vanished from any use. Pretty...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Fair point. Bollards seems to be the term used by the city of Toronto for several designs, but all of them are plastic and more or less flimsy. The newer ones put in in High Park, for example, are a sturdier round design but still plastic and would do no real damage to a car. Other than the low...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I have been searching for answers on a city council motion from Councillor Colle, passed in 2021 for transportation services to do a feasibility study on building a bridge over the Allen, which is really the only way to make a sensible Beltline extension work. Unfortunately I recently conirmed...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Bollards with no curbs? More like bollocks. The only places I've seen that are maybe the Bloor Viaduct, or some early installs on Bloor West's bikeway. I am sure there are others, but it's a) a less efficient install as the bollards must be bolted into the road, rather than into curbs, but...

    Toronto The Keeley | 47.85m | 13s | TAS | Teeple Architects

Just to follow up on this issue with the Downsview Dells trail leg that dead-ended at the Keeley: As of this past weekend the construction fences have been taken down (hooray!). However, the trail remains unpaved, and it's quite a steep little grassy hill now to get from the trail end to Keele...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I appreciate your efforts at calm measured response, really! I'm just not sure I agree with you buying in, even partially, to the talking points of anti-bike lane enthusiasts. I understand the pollution/idling argument in theory, but reject it without data. You can say idling cars pollute more...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Good ideas. I think there are limits to the effectiveness of public advertising in a day and age dominated by splintered social media sites and misinformation. But I'd love to see some open, clear fact-based statements by the city as well. Too often they are unable to speak forcefully. It's not...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Just posting this blog link here by longtime cycling advocate jnyyz, outlining what by accounts was an extremely unpleasant and rancorous "cycling plan consultation" held ad hoc by Ward 2 councillor and noted cycling advocate (jokes) Holyday. I'll let the author speak for himself, as I wasn't...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I have been hunting for information from the city and Eglinton Lawrence councillor about a plan to assess a bike connection over the Allen Road between the two Beltline trails (York in the west and Kay Gardiner to the east). The idea goes back a while, as the current connection is garbage. It...
