Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

More dead people, less people paying taxes, I guess... /s

Just the other day in Guelph i saw on the news, a driver killed a woman who was crossing the street at the crosswalk in a 40 zone, with her family. Mother was killed and the baby was airlifted to Hamilton. My guess the driver was driving at a high rate of speed and couldn't stop in time. Or was distracted driving at a high rate of speed. If he was doing the speed limit. He would clearly see people cross the street at the cross walk at 5 PM when its still day light out, AND on a residential street! Not an expressway or the 401.

Not sure how high volume that intersection is. From streetview it looks like it must not be very high volume. Maybe it could be converted to a small roundabout, along with hardening the centre line.

At some point, it is difficult to stop 19 year old men from being stupid. The best solution is to encourage them to use alternatives to driving.

I used to live on Bagot, the next street east from Alma. Paisley has always been an area for speeders as it's one of the a handful of streets that crosses Edinburgh and can get you from one side of the city to the other.

For a good sense of why, note that Paisley—despite being highly residential—has few stop lights or signs and is a 4-lane pseudo-highway just a km west of Alma.

That's a rather defeatist argument. How about making sure there is an exponential increase in consequences to their action - up to and inclusive of license suspension, impoundment, confiscation of their vehicle and jail time. Besides, you think this crowd can be "encouraged" to use alternatives when they are even recalcitrant to basic rules of the road when given the freedom to drive?

Tough on crime, unless your weapon of choice is a vehicle - in which case it's government sanctioned.

3 million people in Toronto going to the Daily Bread Food Bank... 1 Education Minister spending almost 2K on meals!

If you average out over 30 days it is less than 40 bucks for a month (the report noted that it is over a 3 month period, and the top amount in a month was approx 1.2K) - and it is at the cafeteria at the legislature, not some fine dining restaurant. As long as there isn't any booze involved in the tab, I don't think it is the big deal that the NDP made it is, other than some mild hypocrisy (i.e. claiming meals when you are already well compensated).

1.2K is still a lot.. sure maybe not as bad it appears on the surface now after you said that, but just saying...

I just received my monthly Toronto Hydro bill for September 2025 and noticed that it was for virtually the same consumption as in September 2024. (212 kWh in 2024 and 2011 in 2025.)

Though the consumption was virtually identical, costs were quite different.

................... 2024 .................... 2025

Electricity cost $21.84 .............. $19.63

Delivery $47.72 ............. $53.33

Regulatory $1.53 ............. $ 1.57

Total $71.09 .............. $74.53

HST $9.24 ................ $9.69

REBATE -$13.72 .............. -$9.77

To pay $66.61 ................ $74.45

Interesting how the cost of the electricity has decreased - as has the rebate.

None of them think it will happen to them. That's why I prefer design that makes bad decisions have less severe impacts.

3 million people in Toronto going to the Daily Bread Food Bank...

I totally get the point, and am supportive; but this needs some clarification, as it sounds like 3,000,000 discrete clients, and that's not the case.

The number of discrete visits to food banks in 2024, in Toronto was 3,756,271

The number of discrete clients was ~816,000 (still an appalling number) but I do think its important to have the data out there.

In terms of trend line the number of discrete clients was 600,000 in 2020.

More notable, the number of total visits in 2020 was 1.45M, so the number of visits is up well over double in the last 5 years.

Allowing for population growth, double would be about right (per capita usage)

****

I don't think anyone should have to rely on a Food Bank, but surely a near term goal should be to get back to where we were in 2020.

As ever, that will require a meaningfully higher minimum wage, higher social assistance benefits and more affordable housing.

I am sure the crowd screaming about how speed cameras violate privacy is all up in arms about this far less effective, but far more all-encompassing form of surveillance.

Cameras don't do anything for theft, though.

When I worked at a convenience store we were robbed once and had video of the thieves. Gave the video to the police and they shrugged and said "we can't be sure who this is from the video". If police aren't willing to be proactive then you can have as many headshots as you like but it won't make a lick of difference.

Ford here is taking away items that penalize car owners whilst proposing items that protect car owners. Pretty simple stuff.

I used to do Condo Security for 12 years and manage Condos now. I can tell you that cameras simply do not deter people.

If someone is intent on stealing or causing harm they will do so even with a camera there. Cameras don't prevent crime, they only provide proof it happened, by the time people review the footage the person who committed the crime is long gone.
