A mini design fest is unspooling this weekend at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema at Bloor and Bathurst with two films that design professionals and enthusiasts will enjoy.
On Friday, February 6 at 6.30PM and on Saturday, February 7 at 3.30PM, Hot Docs is screening the the 2025 film The King of Color. Directed by Patrick Creadon, it documents the standardization of colour through the creation of the Pantone Matching System by Lawrence Herbert in 1962. Herbert's invention has allowed artists and designers of all types around the world to be able to specify exactly how their works be realized in a predictable way, revolutionizing the production of nearly everything you can lay your hands on. The King of Color probes Herbert's particular approach to colour than changed how we all perceive and use colour today.

On Sunday, February 8 at 4PM, Hot Docs is screening the celebrated 2005 film Sketches of Frank Gehry, directed by and featuring his friend Sydney Pollack. Gehry rocketed to worldwide fame with the opening of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 1997, and was already working on his Art Gallery of Ontario transformation when the film was being recorded. Pollack seeks to tease out where Gehry's genius lies and what makes the buildings resonate so deeply.
