Vaughan Metropolitan Centre transit hub to open this Sunday » be moved!
main_image.jpg

Today we celebrated the transformation of Vaughan with the official opening of the newest bus rapid transit (BRT) rapidway segment and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre [VMC] Station on Highway 7 West.

This Sunday, December 17 — less than a week — is the opening of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre [VMC] transit hub, which includes the opening for service of the TTC Line 1 Subway Extension.

The vivaNext rapid transit project will benefit the entire community. The VMC transit hub opening goes a long way to help support the considerable growth in York Region and the City of Vaughan for generations to come.

Thought this is the most appropriate thread, if vaguely, for pictures of the VMC rapidway station; I quickly hopped on Orange out to Creditstone and back:

1) Lobby by the tunnel connecting to/from the subway station; elevators and escalators were still closed today and not looking tremendously close to completion, stairs only. Thankfully an accessible connection is available via the elevator inside the main station building and the on-street crosswalk at Millway, which services the mid-road vivastation at grade in addition to this tunnel connection.

2) Stairs up to the platform. There is a little mid-level halfway up, when you take the stairs. Escalators looked like they'll go all the way up in one shot.

3) Approaching Eastbound Viva Orange bus.

4) Heading back Westbound on Viva Orange.

5) Panorama of the station. It's quite something to behold. The ceiling/general structure is stunning, IMO, both from inside and when you look at it from down the street...an impressive feat. This is a wonderful case of well-integrated urban transit planning, done in advance of its becoming a necessity. Can't wait to watch VMC grow!

I wonder if VIVA will have an express route to Vaughan Mills?
There will be, and that is Viva Silver which runs from VMC to Richmond Hill GO. I wonder if the future Viva Silver route will use this viva station. I would assume it would use the SmartCentres Place Bus Terminal, since it terminates at VMC. However, it wouldn't be that bad if it enters the Rapidway by turning right on Jane, then right to Edgeley Blvd to turn back North (other way around could work too). This would mean there would need to be northbound platform, where there are now 2 eastbound and 2 westbound.

How soon will VIVA Silver be online?

How soon will VIVA Silver be online?

I believe the original date was 2018, but it was pushed to 2020. Maybe they wanted to see how Viva Purple in the section of Highway 7 between Town Centre and Kennedy behaved before going with more routes? Or not enough demand.

In November 2017 it was postponed to 2022! Ouch! https://view.publitas.com/york-region-transit/2018-transit-initiatives/page/99

I think with VMC open, it would make sense for the VMC to Yonge stretch to open sooner than that, then the Yonge-Leslie-Don Mills stretch later.

This is very unfortunate, even 2020 makes little sense, but 2022 and 2023? That's just stupid.

It would be better if they extended route 4 from Vaughan Mills to VMC, as a pilot for what ridership would look like as it does the exact same route (and more to Woodbine Ave).

It makes sense to do "baby steps" and build up ridership first. VMC won't be established before then anyway. I do hope they run a branch of the 20 to Richmond Hill GO in the meantime though.

Route 20 to RH GO doesn't makes sense as it keeps going north, but Route 4 to VMC makes A LOT of sense, as it goes from Vaughan Mills to Woodbine Ave, therefore extending it to VMC will not take that many extra buses.

York Region Transit is awful. The region isn't at all committed to funding transit, despite lobbying hard for subways and building very expensive bus rapid transit medians.

If this was Brampton, the the Viva Silver line would be running by now, and there would be several bus routes running every 10 minutes weekday daytime into VMC, and every 20 minutes on weekends.
