Toronto TYSSE: York University Station | ?m | 1s | TTC | Foster + Partners

Unrelated question, but what's a Bell Payphone doing at the entrance? I thought Bell was attempting to remove them all.

I believe this landmark station will have a transformative effect on the University and could encourage more research related projects and maybe another wave of growth at York U. Maybe other seconday campuses from other outside universities like Waterloo, Western or Queens'. I'm just dreaming here, but this is a natural place for an academic super-centre.

Completely agree. Which is why I'm a little annoyed that York U wants to build a satellite campus in Markham. First of all York U will be the most well connected suburban campus in the GTA, with its two subway stations and dozens of bus routes connecting to it. At the same time it's not like they lack the real estate to expand, unlike the downtown campuses of Ryerson or U of T. Much of the campus still feels barren and suburban. It could benefit from a lot more intensification.

Well, Markham wanted a university campus, and the province was willing to pony up some money to help establish one, so York couldn't say no to that catnip.

Not only that, the province is pushing for these 'satellite' campuses.

Its the same reason we hear about a Ryerson campus in Brampton.

From Doors Open. Looks good.

I really hope that they will install actual next train displays instead of the current garbage they have at the stations. They've spent billions on this project, so it's pretty much a chump change expense. It'll be a mighty shame of they end up penny pinching on a useful piece of equipment

I fail to understand what you mean by actually next train displays and referring to the current screens as being garbage. There is a lot of backend tech involved with them. They are cable of provide much more information then the next train being there in five minutes. Like for example if there is a serous delay report it on ALL screens in the stations.

For the interior of these stations (the most important part) this one is probably my fav. I've grown to like exposed concrete like this and find it, and much of brutalism as a whole, to be a lot warmer feeling than critics argue. I particularly like the exposed structural cross beams, as well as the use of black as the contrast colour. Looks solid. Too bad it was only open for Saturday.

The project suffered a lot from the lack of attention to details - the concrete is more stained than it should be, and not at all at a level that I will associate with Foster. It's nice (especially th e lightscoop/entry pavilion), but in terms of finishing I think Downsivew (to be Sheppard West) has it beat.
