TTC: Other Items (catch all)

If brake dust is harmful to such a degree, there should be clear epidemiological evidence in both the worker and user population - comparing it to smoking where the link is definitively demonstration in vitro and in vivo is off base. In the case of diesel - it's not just particulate matter that is of concern, but PAH and other combustion products.

That won't help the workers though, besides it's not clear if the doors will be hermetic.

They don't have to be hermetically sealed to make an order of magnitude difference in the amount of dust in the air on the platform. But full height versus half-height would make a big difference.

E.g. full height:

versus half height:

Would it though, given the types of particulates we're talking about.

After a nudge to @BradTTC, the signs at Coxwell promising the bus loop rebuild complete in October or December 2016 have been replaced with new ones calling for April 2017. Question is which is the critical item - reconstructing the loop or the front entrance (since the temp entrance uses the 22 platform)
There appear to be some forms being laid in the bus loop but it's still quite a mess. I'm no construction expert so it's possible it will be open by the new board period... but to the unexpert eye and at the usual pace of work at this station? I'm guessing not.

Apparently there is an issue with tunnel washing at present relating to drains - it looks like the water was untreated and full of unpleasant gunk and Queens Park had an issue with that. There is new equipment coming apparently - maybe it sucks up the water as it washes?

As for platform doors, if the tunnel air was blown into vents overhead with electrostatic filters rather than indiscriminately onto platforms, then the air being sucked back into the tunnel via return vents would be cleaner, no? One would think the cleaner the air gets generally, the less hard the filters on the train AC will have to work (although TTC will probably just change filters less often :( )

Yes, that's been quoted - TTC is expecting a new vacuum train - maybe that would replace the need to "wash" tunnels?

If the platform doors are sealed - the incoming train would basically work like a piston and force the tunnel air out through vent shafts (if any) instead of the platform/concourse/exit. It would be nice to have a negative pressure set up where air can only go from the platform into the tunnel - but I don't think our stations are set up for much mechanical ventilation.

So far so good. Hallelujah. So what the hell is the problem then? Is this the same thing as owning a vacuum cleaner is different than using a vacuum cleaner? Just owning it doesn't make the tunnels clean.

I guess the questions should be is what is the definition of"regularly"? every week?biweekly? monthly? bimonthly? Semiannually?

Part of the problem is that when it does get used that they frequently have to go through and fix the inevitable electrical issues that pop-up. They wash the stations with it fairly frequently, but apparently only annually in the tunnels.

Or they're intending to replace their existing, and still used (according to http://transit.toronto.on.ca/subway/5510.shtml) Vacuum Rodder RT-56

RT-56 isn't going anywhere. It is used to remove ballast and stone from around trackwork, not really for cleaning the tunnels. This new car will be used for that.

Actually Byford, it's most regrettable that TTC air quality is comparable to Beijing, period. That's coming from the researchers who performed the study. And the Star correctly reported that "at 95 micrograms per cubic metre, researchers say the levels are typical of an average day in pollution-choked Beijing".
