The part of that Toronto Sun article that mentions the Mayor's response to secrecy....
Until council decides on the deal, more information is “not going to be made public,” he said. To avoid competitors stealing the plan for another location, “there are elements of this that are only being disclosed to council.”

What elements?.....maybe a master plan for an entertainment district?...that includes a brand new arena (and maybe new NHL team), a brand new VIP Cineplex theater, world-class restaurants, high-end retail, open park space, and...............CASINO!!!!!

I think that after they give the arena the green light next week, the Mayor and Council will start to focus on the casino.
Maybe they needed to finalize the arena before they made the bid for the casino. Now the arena can be included in the plans they present to OLG.

You'll have 20,000 people pouring out of an arena...where are they gonna go? Well some may have dinner, some may do some shopping....but most will go to the casino. Just like Vegas....you go see a show, have some dinner, and go to the casino!

Everything you cited less the casino is public knowledge though ;) The cinplex the hotel, the park ... you can even find the exact plans for them. Also the cinplex is going further west of this.

Hard to believe the casino has anything to do with this, the stadium has been in the works for a while now, longer then most people know. The casino plan hasn't, at least as far as I'm aware.

So maybe we'll see Thursday if there is more to it then that. I don't think there is, it's probably more specific i.e. who's managing the arena, maybe a team ? Things like that.

The VIP Cineplex is only 1 block west. It looks like there will be a path through a park that leads from the Arena to the Cineplex.

There is no way they could have come out and said they were building a casino there before the Province made the "official" announcement. There are other casinos and other jobs that are affected with a new GTA casino. If they knew before then they would have had to keep it a secret. The proposal for this arena was delayed. Last November, the media reported that the proposal would be made to Markham council by Feb 2012. However, after February passed, the proposal had still not been received. I personally believe that the Town has to wait for the arena to be "official" before they make the announcement that they want the casino.
 
Not sure how that's related at all ... they can announce they want it whenever they want no ? :)
Or are you implying the province has already given it the green light and somehow it's part of the stadium.

I'm implying that, in my personal opinion, all those Bureaucrats and CEOs already know what's gonna happen.
 
Ahh come on, its just people having a fantasy about a Casino in Markham...the only way they will get the Casino is if Toronto lets it pass by, and even then they will have stiff competition from Mississauga and Vaughan. I say get in line.

I agree but 1 or 2 years ago would anyone think Markham would get a stadium!

If GTA Sports and Entertainment had said a year ago publically that they were thinking about building a second 20,000 seat arena for concerts in the GTA, no one would have believed they would ever think of building it in Markham. It would have been just people having a fantasy about an Arena in Markham. They obvious choice would have been Toronto....right?

Instead, what happened was that the plans were done behind the scenes. All the CEOs and politicians already knew about the plans before the information was leaked and the media reported on it last November.

That is what happened with the arena.....so are you saying that scenario is impossible to also happen with the casino?

Yes you are correct though...it is just a fantasy......FOR NOW!!!!!! :)

I'm hoping that if there is a team it'll be the Ontario "whatevers." Most people outside of Ontario have never even heard of Markham.

If we do get an NHL team, maybe that'll be the time to seek official city status?:p

For the most part, people in Markham are not looking to get an NHL team. The purpose of the arena is to accelerate the development of Downtown Markham/Markham Centre.
It's the media that is focusing on the fact that there is a possiblity of a new team. If that ends up happening then GREAT! However, even without an NHL team, the arena will attract people to Markham Centre, resulting in restaurants and stores wanting to be there.

Don't be so sure. I'd bet once there's a casino downtown (and maybe even if there isn't), you'll see casinos in Markham, Mississauga, etc, as everyone will want a piece of the action.

On the contrary, I believe this is being built for a 2nd NHL team. This guy is not plunking down that much cabbage for the sake of downtown Markham.... obviously there is a lot more behind the scenes than they can let be known. Like TrueNorth keeping their mouths shut to get their team. This is how the game is played in the NHL, you have to tow the line. To think this is just for the benefit of Markham is absurd.
