SmartTrack (Proposed)

Just what's UPX? A few trainsets that would be woefully insufficient for that stated task, a few custom build stations with the same issue, and a termini that offers no possibility of extension. Like seriously, TTC Riders are a bunch of hacks.

AoD

Ya they make it seem like there's no added costs to making this a viable transit line. Like all Metrolinx has to do is give up the line to the TTC and we can all be riding it for $3 dollars. I dont know who is behind this group and why they are getting so much attention like they actually know anything about transit, their nonsense is getting tiring.

What do you make of this advocacy group that's sprung up - Friends & Allies of SmartTrack (FAST), http://www.fastgta.ca?

A handful of people with no significant transit expertise, possibly connected to Tory, pushing for Smart Track with dubious claims and estimates.

A hastily assembled website, complete with verbiage taken from the NoJetsTO.ca site about a a 'jet-free waterfront'?

Interesting.

Jumping to the "Facts about Fasttrack".

Number one:
  • From Unionville to Union Station the current commute is about 134 minutes. On the SmartTrack line: 42 minutes. Less than half the time!
134 minutes? A quick glance at the current schedule http://www.gotransit.com/timetables/en/PDF/Quicktables/06150915/USTN/UVGO.pdf shows that it's currently 25 to 41 minutes.

  • Approximately 90% of SmartTrack is on existing GO tracks, so it will not displace any existing roadway.
That's just not true. It's only single track up to Stouffville. There's no way that the extra track that is needed is only 10% of the track.

Not sure who is behind it, but with such blatant and obvious lies, I don't see how anyone would take these clowns seriously.

Their phone number doesn't work. It connects to a business called Tar6, apparently.

Allies of major Tory have formed a Smart Track booster group that purports to "educate the public" and promote Smart Track. Their website is fastgta.ca (FAST = Friends & Allies of Smart Track). The mayor says he's aware of this lobby group and will not be personally involved, however Tom Allison (who worked on Wynne and Tory's election campaign) is one of the leading forces behind FAST. From what I've been seeing on twitter so far, the website is a copy & paste job of the same horse-shit "facts" that came out of the election campaign. Here's just a small sample:

The reports haven't even come out yet, no one really know what Smart Track is anymore, and yet the mayor and his allies continue to preemp the discussion, make shit up as they go along, and remain steadfastly committed to both Smart Track and Scarborough subway. His performance on the Gardiner file demonstrated how much he really cares about facts and expert advice especially when they don't support his preconceived biases. Expect the exact same behavior here too. Expect the Scarborough subway to go ahead no matter what the numbers will say. Needless to day, the DRL is dead on arrival at this point. Smart Track has sucked the oxygen from all other transit needs in this city, and in the end all we are likely to get out of this are RER upgrades that were gonna happen anyway, with the only difference being that Toronto is now obligated to pay for it (without tax increases, yeah right).

Seems that FAST is related to the NIMBY group opposing jets at the Island airport:

they are, I guess, the Bay street counterpoint to TTC riders.....proving nothing more than mis-facts at either extreme are not helpful

It kinda looks like someone called in some favours to get Alvin Curling, Kyle Rae and three others to pretend to be a serious advocacy group.

The fact that someone just copy-paste text from the NoJetsTO site for the donation page suggests it's either the same designer, or someone is common to both groups. A SmartTrack advocacy group presumably benefits Tory, but then he also has some interest in maintaining the island airport, right? John Tory Jr works for an airline based there?
