SmartTrack (Proposed)

Absolutely.

For example the Eglinton LRT will launch with 2 coupled LRTs, the plaforms are designed currently for 3, and all of the underground stations were designed so that they can be expanded to 4 car LRTs in the future if needed.

Luckily above ground transit is much more versatile in that regard.

Massively overbuilding is one thing, but you also don't want to make a Canada Line-like mistake and build a line that is near capacity on Day 1. A decent buffer within the 20-30 year planning horizon is probably best.

OT - is it? My understanding is that while the structure of the box can technically accommodate a length of 4 cars, the placement of structural/mechanical elements (stairwells, ventilation, whatnot) precludes that.

The station boxes would accommodate the maximum. The station initial station layout would be like the interior non-supported walls of a house or office floor, partitions can be moved, along with wiring, ducts, or plumbing. Just look out the front or rear window when you ride the Line 4 (Sheppard) to see how a 4-car subway station fits into a 6-car station box.

Still not sure what this money is actually going to. It's not going to cost $2.6B to put in a few infill stations along GO lines, especially when GO themselves are contemplating adding them (see the head article posted yesterday).

I still maintain that this is a backdoor way of funding the DRL as part of the SmartTrack network. Eglinton West is DOA, which means the only other issue with SmartTrack is the lack of capacity coming into Union once RER is rolled out.

Press release a couple years from now: "In order to alleviate the future bottleneck at Union due to the co-location of RER and SmartTrack, we are announcing a new downtown tunnel for SmartTrack, running under Wellington through the core, and King St W west of downtown. This will provide much needed relief to the King streetcar, and will allow SmartTrack to run independent of GO RER through downtown Toronto. This new tunnel will make use of the funding already committed to SmartTrack by the City and the Federal Government."

The money is for GO electrification, not specifically for SmartTrack. It just so happens that SmartTrack will benefit from GO Electrification hence why Toronto media is linking it directly to SmartTrack. In reality, this isn't Toronto's $2.6 billion. It's being used throughout the GTHA.

That's a confusing headline then, and Tory isn't making things any clearer. You're right that Trudeau pledged it for electrification, but then Tory steps up and basically says that Trudeau is funding SmartTrack. Electrification was never coming out of SmartTrack's budget anyway, because previous to this the Province was picking up the entire tab. Nothing from Trudeau's quotes in the article suggests he even mentioned SmartTrack.

In either case, this will allow the Province to either a) redirect $2.6B of what they had earmarked for GO RER to other local projects (ex: WWLRT, Dundas BRT, North Yonge Subway extension, etc), or b) expand the scope of GO RER to include new lines or segments of new lines. That $2.6B would go a long way to expanding the Milton Line to handle RER.

It is actually $4.6B that Mr. Trudeau has promised.....he promised $2B towards GO's electric ReR plans and confirmed that he would honour the $2.6B that Harper had pledged to ST.

Strange that the article didn't make mention of that. That's even better news then!

New staff report suggests UPX could become part of smart track. That would be a dream come true for certain people on this forum :).

Just what's UPX? A few trainsets that would be woefully insufficient for that stated task, a few custom build stations with the same issue, and a termini that offers no possibility of extension. Like seriously, TTC Riders are a bunch of hacks.

but the Star has given them a large podium of credibility
