2007 Ontario Election: John Tory throws the Election!

I'd really be sad to see that happen. If it weren't running against Wynne, I'd probably want to see him win. I'd much rather have a moderate Tory leader in opposition than some Randy Hillier type they might elect to replace him.

well if its a randy hill type he won't win any seat close to Toronto then...

Man, this campaign is too entertaining. I almost wish I wasn't going to Europe so I could watch the last few days.

...almost.

John Tory trying to soften his stance on the school funding issue, or flip flopping as the media is portraying it, sealed his fate. He basically handed the Liberals a victory on a silver platter, just as he did with Kim Campbell's campaign. All McGuinty has to do is mention the flip flop and make fun of the "Leadership Matters" slogan, and sit back and ride the wave to re-election.

btw, I support merging the Catholic and public boards too. I think this election has really started a discussion on that, and we'll see it as an election issue in 4 or 8 years.

Well the Tories will lose this riding.

The Tory person is panicking and is putting up huge signs with out asking people.

Third time a big tory signs been put on my lawn. Actually, all liberal signs have been hid by massive tory signs. Really what kind of election plan is that.

The tory candidate's father tried it in the federal election and he lost by a huge margin...

Actually the tory people have few signs, as the liberals have many more. Most side streets have liberal signs while only high traffic areas have Tory signs.

Liberals need to lose 14 seats to lose majority. However they will pick up one seat in Toronto and win two new seats.

Religious schools. Geez.

This has got to be be one of the snooziest elections in memory. Even the whole MMP thing has hardly lit any sizzle out there. I'm honestly expecting a record low turn-out.

no, i am only 20 and living with my parents.

My dad and Mom are solid Liberals and my sister is a crackpot socialist (NDP), however she's to lazy to vote.

The Federal election is when it gets serious around here, almost everyone i know votes then.

These are very bad numbers for Tory and this suggests they will be shut out of the 416 again.

This really demonstrates how dumb an idea Tory's plan for religious schools (I hate the term "faith-based") is. This riding is practically tailor-made for him but he has turned off too many upper-crust WASPs in Leaside and Lawrence Park (i.e. the only demographic in Toronto that actually votes heavily Conservative)

Al Waxman! Is that you? Back from the dead to save Kensigton!?

Yeah, poor Tory. You have to feel kind of sorry for him. An otherwise smart guy who had the opportunity to set the electoral agenda, but picked one of the most pointless issues to trumpet - and then backs off it.

Howie Hampton yelled at the media today, pointing out that they had not set the electoral agenda and paid too much attention to this whole faith-based school fiasco. Howie raised some reasonably good issues in the process. Maybe he should keep raising them and the press might start listening (that's how it works, Howie. It's called press agentry).

I really think Tory is done. The party just isn't going to give the guy another chance after this coming (and likely) humiliating loss.

If the whole religious schooling controversy was never raised, I think the Tories may have picked up a few 416 and quite a few 905 seats. They would have been on the road to recovery in Toronto. However, what is going to result is a complete shut-out in the 416 and a an almost complete shut-out of the inner 905. Why I find this interesting is that Tory is the first PC leader in perhaps a generation that really embraced (to some degree) issues affecting Toronto. With a new leader likely, it'll be interesting to see if they use next week's results to write-off Toronto (as has worked for them in the past) or to follow Tory's line and chalk it up to a bad move with regards to religious school funding.

Sadly, I suspect it'll be the former and that the Tories will find a "Common Sense 2.0" leader and run with that next time.

in 2002 to suggest the Tories would win only one or two seats in Toronto/Peel would have been crazy talk.

Its surprising how much these areas have changed politically.
