While creating new downtowns in the suburbs is always a long-term exercise, no new downtown in the Greater Toronto Area has formed more quickly than that of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. The area was brought into existence by the arrival of the University Line 1 subway at the end of 2017, and tall residential buildings have been popping up ever since, along with a couple office buildings, the first phase of a major new park, some street retail, a major new library, and a YMCA. While a lot has happened in the space of a half dozen years, the area still needs more density and pedestrian animation to make it feel lively, but in this image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor toronstruction, a wall of moving LED graphics is there to help foster the urban feel and encourage the animation that will come over successive years.
