Immediately east of Toronto's Liberty Village neighbourhood is another former industrial area turned the tightly-packed community sometimes know as the Ordnance Triangle, named for the street that enters into it and for its wedge shape, hemmed in on the north and south by converging rail corridors. East of Strachan Avenue, developers in the area focused on another local landmark — Fort York, which is just to the south — renaming the area Garrison Point. Formerly low-rise, the area has gone high-rise, with the last tower addressed to 45 Strachan Avenue now under construction, a residential rental from BentallGreenOak.

Hariri Pontarini Architects is the creative force behind all the towers on the east side of Strachan Avenue — two towers each for Garrison Point and Novus stand completed — with each complex asserting its own identity. Over the past year, the ascent of 45 Strachan Avenue from grade is now bringing its distinct design to the area..

Captured from an elevated vantage point in August, 2023, six months after our last update, the podium's six concrete floors are fully formed and the seventh-floor formwork underway. A concrete pump sits to the right of the tower crane, ready for a pour once the forms are in place and rebar and conduits have been laid down..

Still looking to the northeast but from ground-level a month later in September, 2023, the tower rises above the retail-ready first storey of the podium, with its taller ceiling height designed to accommodate commercial spaces. Above the podium, with the tower's first few storeys formed, the irregular shape of the tower's floorplate is becoming apparent. As seen in the rendering at the top of this article, each volume of the tower will be clad distinctively to lessen its monolithic quality, the shorter northwest volume with a lighter but more angular cladding, while the southeast volume will eventually sport black accents and rounded corners.

Jumping ahead several months, this February, 2024 snapshot below shows glazing now being applied to the podium, while cladding now appears on the tower floors above, now grown considerably taller.

Returning to the northeast-facing vantage point, the building's west and south elevations come into focus, showing how much the building has risen, now about 30 storeys.

Looking southwest towards the development from Stanley Park, 45 Strachan Avenue’s northwest volume, to the right from this vantage point, is about three storeys from completion, while the southwest volume to the left has about nine more storeys to go to its final height of 131.97m. Cladding has reached only about a third of the way to the eventual top of the tower, and many more components are still to come. To the left is one of the Garrison Point buildings, while to the right, ZEN King West at the east end of Liberty Village bookends the image.

45 Strachan Avenue it will offer 433 residential rental  units, along with commercial space at ground level, completing the Garrison Point community.

UrbanToronto will continue to follow progress on these developments, but in the meantime, you can learn more about it from our Database file, linked below.
