This morning, Toronto Mayor John Tory launched the Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation, (TSHC) and declared the official start of its operations as a seniors-focused social housing provider in Toronto. The TSHC is owned by the City, and was created in 2021 as a part of the City’s Tenants First plan.

The TSHC has assumed operating responsibility and will provide subsidized rental housing for approximately 15,000 low and moderate income seniors in 83 Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC)-owned buildings across the city. The TSHC has employed former workers of the TCHC’s Seniors Housing Unit.

“The creation of the Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation delivers on a commitment we made to provide seniors with safe, well-maintained homes and improved living conditions, services and experiences and to lay the foundation for that by having an organization in place which could focus exclusively on seniors housing," said Tory. "This is an important milestone in the City’s Tenants First vision coming to life, and I would like to thank all those who made today’s important milestone possible.”

The launch included a tree-planting ceremony and the installation of a commemorative plaque outside one of four TSHC regional offices; the other three regional offices will host similar events in the coming days.
