On the edge of Lake Ontario in Toronto's downtown core, Menkes Developments' Sugar Wharf complex has had an eventful several months since our last update. The first phase of the development includes a virtually complete B+H Architects-designed office tower at 100 Queens Quay East which has recently seen LCBO's flagship location move into its retail base, while two rising architects—Alliance-designed condominium towers known as Sugar Wharf Condos Phase 1 have been gaining both height and character through newly installed balcony guards on lower floors.
Our last update on the project was in September, 2021 when we shared that the tower exteriors of the future 70 and 64-storey condo towers were becoming marked by the installation of varyingly shaded balcony guards on the lower levels. Now, the dark gray, light gray, and white guards have been installed almost a quarter of the way up on the taller of the two buildings, and the guards are slowly beginning to display the main exterior expression of the building.
Crews are still working on forming the upper levels — of which there are a handful of more storeys to go on the south building and many more on the north building — as well as installing glazing on the formed upper floors of the towers. The shared podium of the towers, however, has been clad and glazed, with balcony guards installed. There is still work being done on the podium, as can be seen above. Once completed, the podium's lowest floors will will include retail spaces while the upper podium floors will include residences and amenities.
Eventually, the gray and white balcony guards will offer a whimsical pattern that dances up all four sides of each tower. It will look something like this:
Looking across the street, is the office tower, 100 Queens Quay East, which is receiving some of its final touches. The LCBO's flagship location was opened in its base earlier this month, and the 24,000 ft² store features the most expansive selection of wines, spirits, and beers, including the largest Vintages wines selection in LCBO’s 670-plus store network.
The previous flagship store a block to the west will be redeveloped as part of a new public park, and the Sugar Wharf Phase 2 Condos, three more tall towers. While the previous store will be completely demolished, Phase 2 will incorporate sections of the heritage LCBO office and warehouse building walls that currently exist on site.
