Last week, Trillium Health Partners (THP) announced the Trillium HealthWorks expansion program, which includes major works at two of the three hospital sites under their umbrella in Mississauga and Etobicoke; leaving the most up-to-date site — Credit Valley Hospital — alone for the moment, while totally replacing the Mississauga Hospital on Hurontario Street, and expanding the Queensway Health Centre, which we looked at yesterday.
THP cares for more than 1.3 million patients annually, making it one of the busiest health care providers in the country – justifying the need for its expansion projects in order to accommodate the future population increase of the area the sites serve.
The current Mississauga Hospital sits on sprawling grounds at the west of Hurontario Street and south of Queensway West, and is comprised of several buildings built over many years, the first wing built in 1958. The current hospital, a multi-winged building which can be seen on the lower left of the image below, will continue in operation as the new hospital is built. The new hospital will be built at the corner of Queensway and Hurontario, requiring the demolition of an existing parking garage, a seniors residence, and a medical office building currently in use as a Covid-19 assessment centre. The first phase of construction, to start in 2022, will be to replace the current parking garage with one located to the south of the new hospital site on land that is now used for surface parking.
Anticipated to begin construction in 2025, at 22 storeys and approximately 2.8 million ft² of space, the new Stantec-designed Mississauga Hospital will be almost triple the size of the current hospital. As well as creating throughly modern facilities, to decrease wait times the new hospital will have one of the largest emergency departments in Ontario, while the 14 operating rooms of the current hospital will be replaced with 23 in the new hospital. Over 350 new beds will be added to bring the total to over 950 beds, of which over 80% will be in private rooms.
Trillium Health Partners says the new hospital will continue to deliver highly specialized care through programs such as the regional centre for cancer care, advanced cardiac surgery, and geriatric mental health services, among others, while adding advanced diagnostic imaging facilities, a new pharmacy, and clinical laboratory.
Once the new hospital is complete, the old one will be demolished, and the grounds will be landscaped with gardens and terraces for both patients and hospital staff to enjoy.
The development was approved by the Provincial government in March of 2021, and early works began in September.
