Located about a 15 minute drive from the downtown core, Toronto's very first condo for cars is on its way at 20 Towns Road near the foot of Highway 427 and the Gardiner Expressway. The project, by ToyBx, offers commercial condominium units specifically tailored for car storage, and is being developed at the site of a former purpose-built concrete distillery building. Rather than renting a space to keep a car, the condo offers the option to own the space—which ToyBx argues makes for a much better investment while also offering the opportunity to have a full-sized man cave for a car, motorcycle, or other recreational vehicle.
The existing three storey, 180,000ft² building is planned to have a partial fourth level added to it. From the main floor, two car elevators provide access to the upper floors. Over the first three floors, the condo will house 195 private, secure, self-contained units of various sizes, with 39 penthouse units on its fourth level having a panoramic view of the city and lake.
Units will come in various sizes, with the smallest unit of 565ft² able to accommodate four cars via car stackers, and the largest able to accommodate up to eight cars. There is also the possibility to combine units of any size.
Each unit features 18ft-wide, 9ft-high vertical lift garage doors and 20ft ceilings. Purchasers of any sized unit are given an 12 circuit electrical panel per unit, LED lighting, and optional pre-set platform configurations set to the specific unit. Beyond this, units can be furnished with many developer add-ons including car lifts, storage platforms, and custom cabinetry. There is also the option to have the floors finished to the purchaser's liking, and to have the lighting of the unit changed. Other add-ons include the ability to have fast charging for luxury electric vehicles, and built-in de-humidification capabilities for those who want to keep a close eye on the moisture content of their unit, beyond the climate control imposed by the facility.
The condo will feature 24/7 access and a state of the art security system with app-based entry. There will be a common washroom and utility room on each level.
Although it will be the first of its kind in Toronto, car condos of the like currently exist all over North America. The existing models in the United States and western Canada are standard industrial units with drive-ins from the exterior. The condo coming to Toronto will be different, with its upper floors serviced by two car elevators, and four high-speed garage doors to access the units on the ground floor.
A plan and price list will be available shortly. The sales launch is scheduled for early December, following the release of 10 show-suites that are currently under construction at the site. The car condo is expected to be fully completed by 2023.
