Just west of Lansdowne along Dupont in Toronto's Junction Triangle neighbourhood, a new mixed-use development is moving along that will feature purpose-built rental apartments above a base with retail and a Toronto Public Library branch. The 299 Campbell Avenue project by TAS and BentallGreenOak will boast an avant-garde stepped design by Teeple Architects rising 14 storeys, with the steps now materializing as the building rises taller.
Work has been underway since June, 2018, when construction kicked off with a ground breaking on the cleared site of a former single-storey commercial plaza at the southeast corner of Dupont and Campbell. We last checked in on construction in October, when forming had begun of the building's ground level. It's been a busy six months of work since, and the building is now having its 11th floor formed. Just three more residential floors and a mechanical penthouse level will follow before the building tops out at a height of just over 47 metres tall.
As the building rises, the first cladding installation began in the form of brick panels along the building's largely windowless east elevation, which abuts the neighbouring property line in anticipation of future development. In the meantime, the building has begun to step back on certain floors as it climbs, but these articulations in the design will be easier to see after more cladding is installed.
The completed building will include a 10,000 ft² library branch to replace the now closed Perth/Dupont location, previously one of the city's smallest library branches at 3,600 ft². The library will be joined in the building base by new retail space, anchoring the 237 purpose-built rental units above to the sidewalk.
