When MEC moved its Toronto flagship store three blocks north to Queen West in April, 2019, it opened up the store's previous King Street site for redevelopment. Plaza purchased the King site in 2016 and began planning for its redevelopment into a high-rise condominium tower, set to add more life to the ever denser Entertainment District. Following an evolution of its design, 400 King West is now ready for marketing, with new renderings sporting its final look. Set to rise from the northeast corner of King and Charlotte streets, the 49-storey, BDP Quadrangle-designed building is planned to help reanimate the block with two levels of retail at its base, while introducing over 600 new homes to one of Canada's fastest-growing communities.
400 King West's podium and crown are to feature copper-coloured finishes; metallic frames around entryways, and brick-embedded precast framing of the podium suite windows. Above the podium, a glass reveal section divides the podium from the tower. Clad in glazing striated with vertical piers of white precast concrete, the tower levels emphasize the building's verticality. The tower resolves with a crown of three storey penthouses, clad to create a dialogue with the base far below.
400 King West is to bring 612 units to the area, starting in area at 600 ft². Residents will enjoy a set of amenities including a fitness centre, party room, and swimming pool to name a few. Amenity spaces in the building are to be appointed by interior designers U31, with further details about these spaces expected in the coming months.
