On Dupont west of Lansdowne in Toronto's Junction Triangle neighbourhood, construction has passed an important milestone for a new mixed-use project from developers TAS and BentallGreenOak, along with the Toronto Public Library. The new building at 299 Campbell Avenue is set to rise 14 storeys with an avant-garde design from Teeple Architects that will place rental units above a base containing retail and an enlarged library branch.
The project began back in June, 2018, with a ground breaking held on the cleared site of a former single-storey commercial plaza at the southeast corner of Dupont and Campbell. We last checked in on construction this past June when shoring and excavation were completed and crews had recently begun forming the building's two-level underground garage, a task which continued until August, when the ground floor began to emerge.
In the time since, forming of the ground floor commenced, and walls and columns have now sprouted up across the site. In some spots, forming has since moved on to the initial sections of the second floor above. The floors to follow will begin to reveal the first of the varied step-backs of the building's unconventional massing.
This unique shape is to be defined by a mix of textured precast concrete panels with a brick finish and contrasting white aluminum panels.
Upon completion, the complex's 10,000 ft² library branch will replace the existing Perth/Dupont location, which at 3,600 ft² is among the smallest branches in the city. This improved community amenity and new retail will form the base for the 237 purpose-built rental units above.
