Six cranes stand over the Queens Quay East LCBO Lands on Toronto's waterfront, building the initial towers of Menkes Developments' Sugar Wharf community. A 25-storey office tower on Queens Quay East, and a pair of condo towers to the north along Lake Shore Boulevard East are now rising west of Jarvis Street, marking the first buildings in what will become a 4.6 million ft² community of new office, condo, and retail space in the emerging East Bayfront area.

The first element to begin construction, back in December, 2017, was the 25-storey, B+H Architects-designed office tower at 100 Queens Quay East. This tower now stands tall in the southeast corner of the site, with forming currently reaching as high as the 20th floor, leaving just five office levels and a mechanical penthouse to form before the tower reaches its final 117-metre height over Queens Quay.

Cladding installation has stalled in the month since we last checked in, installed up to the eighth floor. This and other elements of work have been slowed or stopped entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure workers can remain at a safe distance from one another. This project is one of many that was deemed essential and exempt from shutdowns mandated in April, though progress has been noticeably slower than previous months.

The 690,000 ft² office tower is expected to open next year, anchored by the new headquarters for the LCBO, plus 90,000 ft² of office space for The Toronto Region Board of Trade and its trade services arm, the World Trade Centre Toronto (WTC-T).

To the north, the large podium that will support the architectsAlliance-designed Sugar Wharf Condos Phase 1 complex is gradually progressing. Forming is ongoing for the podium's third and fourth levels, where floorplans vary from level to level, making for a longer forming process than the repeating, reduced floorplates that will follow when the towers begin to rise towards 64 and 70 storeys, with heights of 218 and 230 metres.
