All across Toronto, public housing communities are being redeveloped on the mixed-income model that has proven successful in Regent Park. In North York, one such redevelopment is ongoing on the site of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) Allenbury Gardens affordable rental housing community near Sheppard Avenue East and Highway 404, and just to the north of Fairview Mall. Led by developer Fram Building Group, the community's first two market condo towers, Soul and Connect Condos, are complete at the western half of the site, and are now being followed by three additional condominium and rental buildings to the east. The new Core Architects-designed buildings match the aesthetic established by the initial two towers.
Work is currently furthest along on a 10-storey, 75-unit, TCHC rental building, seen above. It is now topped out and largely enclosed by cladding. To its immediate east, the 17-storey, Vivo Condos is in the process of being topped off. Cladding installation is rapidly enclosing the building in a window wall system with grey-coloured spandrel and clear glazing framed in dark aluminum mullions stretching as high as the 13th floor. Balcony finishes will soon give the building the signature look shown in pre-construction renderings.
As the two buildings to the west progress through their late stages of construction, the earliest signs of activity were recently spotted for the easternmost tower, close to the 404. Here, excavation has begun for the 24-storey, 374-unit Verdé Condos, which once again features a complementary design from Core Architects.
