The title holder of Mississauga's tallest building is expected to change hands multiple times in the next few years. The south tower of Absolute World has held the crown since 2011, though it will be overtaken by the first two towers of the M City community from Rogers Real Estate Development Ltd. and Urban Capital Property Group some time in 2020. The initial pair of 60-storey Core Architects-designed towers are now under construction at the east end of the future 15-acre community at Burnhamthorpe Road and Confederation Parkway.
The project got its start just over a year ago at a ground breaking event, then excavation kicking off by the end of summer and carrying into early 2019. We last checked in on the site back at the start of April, when multiple cranes had just been installed to begin forming of the towers' underground components.
Two months later, progress on the underground levels is apparent, with large sections of the lowest parking level formed. Forming of the underground levels will take several months before concrete begins to rise above grade for the ground floor walls. M1 (the north tower) appears further along, with south tower M2 following closely behind.
The first pair of towers at M City will reach 198-metre heights, overtaking the 175.6-metre height of the Mississauga skyline's current tallest tower at Absolute World. The local record only be temporarily shared by M1 and M2, as follow-up phase M3 is projected to rise 260 metres with 80 storeys, by far Mississauga's tallest proposal, and currently the tenth tallest proposal overall in the entire Greater Toronto Area.
