When we last checked in on Yorkdale Mall's ongoing expansion in March, the mall's latest addition—which is set to house over 40 new retailers including a flagship Nordstrom location—was just beginning to rise above ground level. Now, the skeleton of AIMco and Oxford Properties' new retail space can be seen rising to its full 4-storey height above the neighboring Allen Road.
MMC Architecture's 298,000 square foot expansion will be anchored by a 188,000 sqaure foot Nordstrom store, which will be one of the early Canadian locations for the Seattle-based retailer. Which remaining retailers will round out the $331 million expansion is being kept mostly under wraps for now, adding to the sense of anticipation.
Since Yorkdale is well-known as a Canadian entry-point for prominent international retailers, we can expect some of the new stores to be the first of their kind in Canada. Among them will be popular Japanese retailer Uniqlo, which recently announced Yorkdale and the Eaton Centre as its entry points into the Canadian market.
Recent photos, taken from the south-east corner of the site, show the skeleton of the building now rising to a considerable height beside the existing mall, showing considerable progress since our last update. The new addition is located on the mall's east end, which previously housed a large above-ground parking lot. The lost parking is set to be replaced by additional underground spaces built as part of the mall's expansion.
Since the aesthetic details of the new addition have yet to take shape, a rendering of the completed project (below) gives us a more concrete idea of how the modern new Nordstrom space will look once the first shoppers enter through its doors next summer.
To give the public a fuller scope of the new addition, Yorkdale Mall has provided a fly-through video of the completed project, showing the full scale of the new retail space.
Additional information and renderings of what you can expect can be found in our dataBase file, linked below. If you want to get involved in the discussion, check out the project's Forum thread or leave a comment in the space provided at the bottom of this page.
