Toronto's historic King East neighbourhood has been receiving much attention over the past decade. Many shops, restaurants, and condominium towers have opened up, filling in the gaps and adding further density to the area. One of the biggest changes to the neighbourhood has been the large influx of businesses moving back in, now complementing all several years of residential infill developments, and bringing both a work and play environment to the area. Now, a very prominent development for one of Canada's largest media companies is under way too.
The Diamond Schmitt Architects-designed Globe And Mail Centre will be opening in 2016, bringing a total of 500,000 square feet of office space, and over 5,000 jobs to the King East office district. As the name implies, Toronto news organization The Globe and Mail will be moving in, becoming the centre's anchor tenant. The Globe And Mail Centre will rise immediately to the east of Coca-Cola Canada head offices and the Toronto Sun's offices. As a result this, several thousand more people will be commuting to this area every day.
Excavation is well under way, with shoring providing support for the existing structures at King and Berkeley, and the red brick King East Centre.
