Once Upon A City: Yorkdale Mall brought shopping into the 20th century

...
It was the T. Eaton Company that got the ball rolling on the construction of Yorkdale Shopping Centre. The retail giant bought a 40-hectare site in North York Township at Dufferin St. and Highway 401 in the mid-1950s — considered the suburbs at the time. Not to be outdone by its Yonge St. rival, Simpson’s then purchased an eight-hectare site to the east in 1958.

A plan to build the complex was announced later that year. The decision was predicated on the construction of the Spadina Expressway (part of the proposed highway is now Allen Road) as the developers refused to proceed until the expressway was approved for construction.

The mall’s design was awarded to the Seattle, WA. firm of John Graham Consultants, with the exception of the Simpson’s store, which was designed by John Andrews of John B. Parkin Associates.

And while other Canadian shopping centres had their receiving doors at the back, Yorkdale was constructed with a one-way, two-laned road for trucks running beneath the centre and leading directly to the retailers’ basement storage area.

The original mall, which took two years to build, opened under Trizec Corporation ownership.

John Graham also designed Seattle's Northgate Mall - which also has a serviceway road under the mall for delivering goods.

Saw in Retail Insider Sporting Life is coming Yorkdale next year. As part of the Restoration Hardware expansion?

Saw in Retail Insider Sporting Life is coming Yorkdale next year. As part of the Restoration Hardware expansion?

You're correct -- if you're familiar with the way the mall is laid out, Sporting Life will have a corner entrance roughly where the Sears entrance was, south of Harry Rosen. RH will be further in. Watch for more announcements as Yorkdale prepares to launch its next expansion phase.

Can't understand the long line to get into the Canada Goose store. No lines at the more stylish fellow Cdn outerwear store Mackage across the corridor (reminds me of a cheaper Moncler). Nadège is sublime...I could eat there every day. Interested in seeing the new Sandro flagship.

Is it just me, or does Yorkdale have great public washrooms?

Is it just me, or does Yorkdale have great public washrooms?

They do. I remember when they started upgrading them like a decade ago and it's been a trend for many shopping centres. For someone who hates using public washrooms it's nice that they made it so I don't have to touch anything.

From the Yorkdale Mall website, at this link:

Underground electronic parking is complimentary up to 5 hours. After the initial 5 hours, the cost is $6 every 20 minutes, to a maximum of $35.00.

Those parking in the lot will be required to pull a ticket and park. A TTC Commuter Parking rate of $7 will apply and is subject to change. Payment is accepted at the pay machine or at the exit gate upon return to the property. Pay stations will accept cash and/or credit card.

To elevate your shopping experience drive up to our curbside valet which offers you the convenience and service that you expect from Yorkdale Shopping Centre.

Valet, $15; located on the South-West side of the shopping centre as well as a new location near the East Parkade entrance beside Nordstrom. Yorkdale Gift Cards can also be used for Valet.

When you have completed your shopping experience here at Yorkdale, please call our Valet service 5 to 10 minutes prior, in order to have your vehicle waiting for you when you arrive at the designated area.

I saw this while I was at the mall today. Anyone know any details?
