Yorkdale Shopping Centre

mexx and holt renfrew pop-up store are now closed. any update on whos replacing?

Someone posed this question on Retail Insider and they hints they gave seem to suggest Versace. They already have a stand-alone store in Vancouver but currently nowhere else in Canada, which seems strange. Yorkdale or Bloor would certainly make sense for them.

It's not standalone in Vancouver - it's part of Leone, but it is considered a shop-in-shop.

Here is a video of the new Nordstrom expansion (click link and scroll down).

I also made a rough layout of the new expansion:

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned here but according to Matthew Slutsky of BuzzBuzzHome,

I just heard from a reliable source that Uniqlo will be coming to Toronto in 2015!

Opening in Yorkdale, with the Nordstrom expansion!

He is usually on top of things when it comes to real estate development scoops, so I'm giving him a little more credibility.

Not sure if you guys read the news about Yorkdale committing $3.4M for security in light of the 2 recent events at the mall.

I think the ability of the cameras to read licence plates will be helpful, although I'd imagine a number of getaway vehicles would've been stolen vehicles in the first place. With the number of high end stores arriving (and already existing) in the mall, I think this will appease a large number of people but, in reality, will not prevent major incidents from happening in the future. That said, at the risk of sounding like a big brother supporter, all in all, I think it's a good idea.

Tngrn, Did you create that layout based on having a lease plan of the expansion? Because you're pretty much bang-on as to where Nordstrom and everything else will go. We've got the lease plan if anyone is interested.

Are they going to finally add stores like Abercrombie, Hollister, Urban Outfitters?

James: Interesting story about the tightened security at Yorkdale noting the two mentioned shooting incidents...

Does the Yorkdale Mall area have a problem with street crime that would make the license plate readers necessary?

I also remember reading about proposals to scrutinize license plates - on Long Island the City of Glen Cove is planning to do so and
the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) plans to challenge their use depending on how the information collected is used for...

Yorkdale has stricter security then Long Island's largest shopping mall - Roosevelt Field in Garden City
See: http://en.wikipedia.com/wiki/Roosevelt_Field_(shopping_mall)

The camera setup at Yorkdale also reminds me of those used in casinos...where the money definitely is...

Personally, I don't think Yorkdale Mall has a crime problem. End of statement. However, with the amount of visitors the mall receives, combined with the subway accessibility, it's inevitable that there will be a situation that arises. The neighborhoods around the mall are certainly not at the same level of affluence as the stores in the mall. That said, I don't believe people committing crimes are walking to the mall either. Again, the subway is right there and the mall is fairly easily accessible by car, making it a destination for anyone, including a would-be criminal.
