York Region Transit: Viva service thread

also they are looking into going hybrid with new flyer as well as buying more 60ftrs for conventional routes this year.
York Region does not need 60ft buses for conventional routes. It needs more service first.. increase frequencies by 50%, don't buy 50% larger buses. 60ft buses make sense on routes with high frequencies... they are silly on routes with 30 minute frequencies.
 
Just got onto a completely empty Viva going north at Bernard. Was it just the weather today? Or do they just start slotting in drivers for the afternoon rush?

Probably the latter. Sometimes a random empty blue just slots itself in at rhc if the route is packed or delayed
 
It's hard to find the right balance with these small-town daytime services. I can't count the number of times where I've been on a completely empty 33 during the day, and fares wouldn't cover minimum wage let alone the drivers' wage and overhead. On the other hand, the 60 minute advance call-in for Mobility completely kills the convenience of public transit.

Comparing to pre-COVID, the following routes will have service increase:

VIVA Orange
1 - Highway 7
2 - Milliken
8 - Kennedy
9 - 9th Line
16 - 16th Avenue
20 - Jane
24 - Woodbine
25 - Major Mackenzie
77 - Highway 7
91/91A/91E - Bayview
98/99 - Yonge

Another around of service reduction, including those that just got service increased in September.

Effective Sunday, November 1, 2020, various YRT routes will have service changes. In addition, three new services are being introduced:

  • Route 305 - Box Grove Express
  • Mobility On-Request Bur Oak
  • Mobility On-Request King City GO
  • Mobility On-Request Stouffville
 

Another around of service reduction, including those that just got service increased in September.

Hopefully the reductions on Route 99 are temporary until the rapidway opens (ridership is down - even without COVID - on both 99 and Viva Blue due to construction-related delays and the street looking like a mess). Yonge really should be moving towards 24-hour service, especially since they want the subway so badly.

Its not really calling it frequent, more like they're saying "here are some of the major changes we're making as we're heading to making a frequent network". They state on the same page that the ultimate goal of the program is to get 15 minute frequencies on all of those corridors.
