Try a search in Oxford. Leafs does not exist as a word. The plural of leaf is leaves. I have no idea what 'leafs' in the Webster's dictionary refers to. A leaf of a table perhaps. Who knows. It certainly doesn't come from proper grammar when forming the plural of a leaf (from a tree)

"Toronto Maple Leafs" is a name...there really isn't any right or wrong when it comes to names.

In this context, "Leafs" isn't the plural of "Leaf"...Leaf is the singular of "Leafs".

In any case, who really cares? It's part of the local vernacular now. Language is constantly evolving and this is just one local example.
