Who will be the next Liberal leader?

Dion got more done in his very few months as environment minister in a minority government than many environment ministers before him in majority governments. Also, the fact Harper called Dion, a former Liberal Inter-Governmental Affairs minister to discuss the "nation" issue while leaving his own Inter-Governmental Affairs minister out of the loop speaks volumes. I think he is a great choice and I'm interested in seeing if Canada is capable of electing a guy who has the talent but not the talk. It is really the "all talk" people we should be avoiding.
 
IMO, the Liberals should have looked for someone outside of Quebec. Canada has 7.6 million Quebecers, equal to about 23% of Canada's 32.6 million people. Yes, the best man/woman for the job should get it, regardless of where they're from, but in politics, you need to also look at the electability of your candidate, and IMO, Quebecers will not vote for Dion, and the ROC will not want another accented Quebecer.
 
Dion is the most experienced in Fed politics and dealing with the Quebec issue. Kennedy is firmly on board with him- I think it was the best choice.

I think Canadians will ultimately vote for the best man- regardless of birthplace or French accent. History has proven this. I think Quebec Liberals will as well, the rest of Quebecers will likely vote Bloc anyway.
 
Latest poll has libs at 48% in Ontario. which is basically wipe out time for the conservatives and ndp.

I guess the accent is a cool thing for Ontarians. Pierre, Jean and now Stephane.

The libs need to win every seat in this province if they hope to renew their majority.

It is at best difficult to make direct comparisons between environment ministers of different governments. What hits the agenda as being important is not based on any reasonable assessment, but founded upon politics. All issues are considered important to different people for different reasons at different times. As to how much "got done" by Martin's minority government is quite debatable.

Martin was no pro-environment PM (exhibit A: cancellation of VIA improvement funds). And Dion was shut out of Martin's first cabinet in favour of twats like Jean Lapierre.

I was at the convention, and it was certainly exciting. I started off Kennedy, was forced to change hats (or should I say scarves) twice, and finally wound up with Dion. I'll maybe say more about it later, but I wanted to agree with Ed's comment. There's nothing more annoying than having the other parties' hacks going on about how terrible they all are. It's pretty useless. However, I did watch a bit of CTV's coverage at one point, and they had members of other parties who were mostly quite impressive commentators. Lisane Gagnon, a former PQ minister, and Marjory LeBreton, the Tory leader in the senate, both had quite interesting insights and they really toned down the partisanship. Olivia Chow, on the other hand, took the entire opportunity to recite NDP election lines bashing the Liberals. I don't think the network will be having her back again.

CTV had Olivia Chow as their commentator? Someone didn't do their homework. I would have picked somelike Joe Comartin or Lorne Nystrom or Bill Blakie (if they had nothing else to do).

unimaginative, thanks for voting Kennedy. I'm actually morning the fact that he came within 100 votes of becoming the leader.

If he had beat Stephan Dion on the second ballot, Stephan would have crossed over to his side and we might be seeing a powerful speaker and a man of incredible charisma and principal as the new Liberal leader.

I don't think Rae or Ignatieff stood a chance for the free votes either way.

It is worthy of note that the only people east of Alberta that won't under any circumstances vote for a Liberal Quebecer are Quebecers.
 
Hard to say now; they're tricky in Quebec (as last cycle's Harper successes proved). And despite whatever, at least Dion doesn't have Chretien's "Uncle Tom" coarseness.

He's not going to sweep the province; but I wouldn't be surprised if comes close to Chretien's 2000 high-water mark in seat total...

Lapierre is one guy I'd like to see go off to pasture.

ummm... lysiane gagnon was definitely not a former PQ minister. she's a life-long journalist and a very prominent federalist. she even rejects the notion that quebec is a nation and she has been a huge critic of the sovereignty movement.

you must be thinking of someone else.

how do you explain the massive majorities that pierre trudeau and jean chrétien won?

a new poll in the globe and mail shows that 2/3 of quebeckers approve of stéphane dion. the idea that quebeckers hate him or would not vote for him is a myth perpetrated by sovereigntists.

are you forgetting that dion was the second choice for quebec liberals, after ignatieff?

Huh? History proves quite the opposite. I think Adma's right and that Dion would have a decent shot at topping Chretien's QC seat count.
