Re: Dion wins
I think Dion's three pillars will resonate with Canadians. At this time in Canadian society, it seems that the priority of Canadians are sustainable economy (Kyoto, which most Canadians support; stronger environmental protections), social equity, while maintaining fiscal probity.
One thing Dion mentions is that, for the cost of the second GST cut, we could give a $5000 child benefit to families with <$25 000 income. Ie, another penny off that cup of coffee, or ending (or at leats put a seriosu dent in) child poverty. Which do you think Canadians would find more inspiring, especially after the lacklustre reaction to the last GST cut?
I might be a bit of a wonk myself (I'm in favour of shifting the tax burden toward consumption taxes like GST and gasoline excise taxes), but I think this is something that Canadians will find more worthwhile. Coupling that with a strong commitment to embrace Kyoto and rejoin the international community should also be popular.
Dion seemed very awkward after his victory, but I've seen him be very articulate and passionate in some of his English debates, so I have faith that he will be able to fight an election very well. His policies should also be quite popular among Bloc supporters, so it will certainly be an interesting campaign.
