Who will be the next Liberal leader?

Don't know if anyone's got thoughts on the speeches or anything. Anyhoo, at the risk of getting Free Dominionish, I'll offer this uncanny Liberal doppleganger here (note: the latter image dates from 1966)

Speeches were ho-hum, full of rhetoric and no substance. BTW, did anyone see Stronach's new hair dew? She's now a brunette and a I have to admit, though I'm not a big fan of hers, she looks 'HOT' :b . Probably realized those other brunettes, Ambrose and Dhalla were getting all the attention. Hmmm, is brown the new blonde?

Kennedy's gK insignia left me thinking of the Kmart logo, for some reason...

Adma,

I thought the exact same thing! The most current K-Mart logo in the States.

Wow. Who knew it would end up Dion vs. Iggy. I prefer Dion, but he's got some electibility issues (proficient, but not perfect English, low charisma, a bit wonkish). But let's put the right wing Alberta wonk with no charisma versus the leftish Quebec wonk with no charisma.

Dion wins

Cool.

Dion was my second choice after Dryden.

What will happen to Iggy? Yankee go home?

Re: Dion wins

^If he stays maybe he and Garth Turner can start the Shoot-Yermouthoff party.

Re: Dion wins

:lol Where in the world did that song come from?

Dion is certainly charisma-challenged but then so is Harper. Dion has a lot of work to do to get himself known outside Quebec. It has also been mentioned repeatedly that he is known but not necessarily that well-liked in Quebec. Him taking Quebec should not be taken as a given.

Sure things can change quickly, but I think Dion will find it very difficult to win the next election if it is held in the spring, as it almost certainly will be. Dion will have a better chance in the election after that, especially if Harper is still leading the Conservatives and people are getting tired of him. In going with Dion I think the Liberals are taking more of a long-range view, and good for them for that.

Re: Dion wins

I think Dion's three pillars will resonate with Canadians. At this time in Canadian society, it seems that the priority of Canadians are sustainable economy (Kyoto, which most Canadians support; stronger environmental protections), social equity, while maintaining fiscal probity.

One thing Dion mentions is that, for the cost of the second GST cut, we could give a $5000 child benefit to families with <$25 000 income. Ie, another penny off that cup of coffee, or ending (or at leats put a seriosu dent in) child poverty. Which do you think Canadians would find more inspiring, especially after the lacklustre reaction to the last GST cut?

I might be a bit of a wonk myself (I'm in favour of shifting the tax burden toward consumption taxes like GST and gasoline excise taxes), but I think this is something that Canadians will find more worthwhile. Coupling that with a strong commitment to embrace Kyoto and rejoin the international community should also be popular.

Dion seemed very awkward after his victory, but I've seen him be very articulate and passionate in some of his English debates, so I have faith that he will be able to fight an election very well. His policies should also be quite popular among Bloc supporters, so it will certainly be an interesting campaign.

Re: Dion wins

Having worked for the Federal Government, I am always dubious about "pillar programs."

Good for Dion, though. I wish him the best of luck. He'll need it against Harper.

Re: Dion wins

When's the last time the Liberals were lead by someone from Quebec? This must be unprecidented.

Re: Dion wins

I've heard of federal candidates who have trouble speaking French, I'm not sure I've seen a Canadian Prime Minister with trouble speaking English ... although there is a President of the United States I can think of.

Yeah, Chretien's english wasn't perfect, but at least he had the vocabulary. I think Dion is the weakest of the top 4 because he seems to lack charisma and determination to beat Harper.

I'm looking forward to him being groomed a bit by the party and coming out with arms swinging at Harper on his first day on the job.

Re: Dion wins

I've been thinking that Dion's win will definitely open the door for my candidate, Gerard Kennedy to come around with an important cabinet position in Dion's government (if he wins).

I think Kennedy will become our prime minister one day. He's still young, he can wait the decade or less that will take for another Liberal leadership convention.

Re: Dion wins

When's the last time the Liberals were lead by someone habitually four-eyed?

Oh yeah, Edward Blake. The only one never to be PM...

Re: Dion wins

it's too bad that someone from toronto didn't win but maybe it's better this way. a toronto leader would have to focus more on everything but toronto or else he would be accused of bias. dion seems to have a boner for the environment so public transportation improvements could be on the horizon.

the thing i like about dion is that he seems to have no affiliation with any religious group.

as the song goes....

"I am not anti-Christian
Before you grab a rope
There is beauty in religion
And joy and love and hope
We're all looking for an answer
Some colossal cosmic cause
But who the **** are you
To turn your views into my laws?"

:D

now it's stéphane Vs. stephen.

may dion bring about good times.
