Agreed. Like I said its all relative. I can't knock anyone if they choose to live in any area. However if you're asking about wellesley & sherbourne crime IS prevalent in that small span of area no one can deny that. Just giving my ying to everybody's yang so the poster will be well informed.
Thanks I couldn't find the actual number. Still a far cry to 600, 000 though.

I maintain that you're blowing it out of proportion. Perhaps you should be referring to random acts of crime, and not just crime. When one drug dealer stabs another one in an apartment unit, I don't see how that affects you.

for starters it gives the area a bad rap and you'll have more guys like me to debate. Plus it could cause property value to drop.
it affects you and everyone living within the community. Indifference is as much of a cancer as crime random or intended. If someone gets stabbed or bullets fly in apartment 1b and you live on the same floor police will question you. You might have even held a convo with the person who was killed or shared a smoke. You might have seen people running from the apartment or worst they might have seen you. Your child/parent/BF/GF might have been on their way up in the elevator to visit you. You don't have to be a criminal for this to happen. if you share the same space its inevitable there will be some form of interaction.
Look, you make the best of the area you live in. safety is subjective and a very personal matter but you are lying to yourself if you think crime doesn't affect the community in which it occurs.
btw don't let the movies fool you. You'll be surprised who the dealers really are in toronto. How else can all these people afford $300k condos

hmmm... My husband & I have been renting in this area for a year & so far so good. We (sometimes just me alone) walk the dogs just before midnight & never felt threatened in anyway. Sure there are some "wierd" characters around but they are mostly "harmless". All they want is to score a hit or 2.
In terms of kids playing, I do see lots of kids playing soccer, basketball, badminton or just simply enjoying some chasing around esp. during the summer months. There's a lot of "traffic" during the day cos there's the library & community centre, I doubt someone walking around randomly opening fire will go unnoticed.
I personally love living in the city cos I feel more comfortable if I have to walk alone at night. There's always pple around, by that I mean more "regular" pple as a ratio to "wierd" characters. In the 'burbs thou it is scary cos if someone strikes, the chances are that there's no one out to witness it! *I think I'm starting to creep myself out now, I should stop*. Anyway, my point is, you should always be aware of your surrounding regardless of where you are. And that if your time on earth is up, it is up regardless of the circumstance.
PS: Question, How many people die of flu/cold every year as compared to murder or being at the wrong place at the wrong time? I am really curious to know the answer.

I've been in a several apartments in the St. Jamestown area over the years and by & large (there are exceptions) they're not very well maintained which is why I wouldn't want to live there as a renter. I live on the edge of St. Jamestown (Wellesley & Jarvis) and I love it here too. I never feel unsafe at any time of the day or night in fact I rarely ever think about it. My only feelings of uneasiness that come to mind are off leash fighter dogs that tend to show up in the summer months which makes me fear for my dog, so I carry pepper spray on my key chain just in case.

awwww.... I love the picture Roy_G_Biv... I'm sure what you are trying to show is the cutest of all the dogs you've seen around the neighbourhood so far. I've never seen any dog dressed like that walking around, except MAYBE for Halloween. I love my 2 dogs & cat; everyone who knows me will tell you so, & I dress up my 2 pups for Halloween & Christmas pictures. Is that really cruelty? 'Cmon, 2hrs a year playing dress up to humour me & many family members is hardly cruelty when, at least 3 times a week, they get 3hrs of walks, running around & socialising with their friends. Every night they are served with St Lawrence Market butcher cut meat.
So anyway, back to off leash "scary dogs". My view is, if a owner lets their dogs off leash they probably know up t0 90% certainty that their dogs are gonna behave. If you keep seeing the same person I encourage you to talk to the owner about it. Ask him/her about the dog's nature, discuss about your fears & avoid the path if he/she is being a jerk. Now if it's just some random off leash "scary dog" walking around; you will get that anywhere. In fact, we were having a leisurely stroll in the Rosedale neighbourhood & a big collie type dog came charging at my 2 pups. The owner was very apologetic & claims that the dog belong to his mom (eye roll). Thank goodness no one got hurt but did I start freaking out & stop walking around that area or start carrying some kind of "weapon" - NO. I also bring my dogs to Allen Garden & there's a Dobbie that goes there often. He gets a little "excited" when playing & I was a little uncomfortable at first but the dogs worked it out themselves. I've also seen tiny little dogs attacking each other while they are on leash & trust me there were some blood involved. Oh btw you can block the off leash "scary dog" better if you have both hands free. If you are carrying yours & the "scary dog" is gonna leap at your dog which may make you fall before you can aim the pepper spray at his eyes & your dog can't run away from him... wow... I just scare the s**t outta myself. Note to self - do not carry dogs in hand while being approached by "scary dog", pin the "scary dog" to the ground instead if there is sign of aggression.

They mostly seem to accompany young people who I believe are street kids, but I can't be sure. This summer there were two Doberman's which I saw most nights at or near the Starbucks or Timothy's on Church Street but in fairness they seemed very well trained, obedient and friendly. I don't fear for my safety, my worry is that one may go after my dog which is a Labrador Retriever, and they don't have a fighting chance. My ex and I used to often sit along the wall by the sidewalk in the summer in front of Cawthra Park after work. We saw two dogs killed by fighter breeds inside the park and many other nasty fights/attcks. We stopped sitting there. Of course this can happen anywhere dogs & owners congregate.

wow... ATTACKED MY FIGHTER DOGS?! That is really "ruff". I can totally understand your fear after witnessing that. I heard of a Dobbie escaping the front yard of a house somewhere on Jarvis x Earl & attacking a smaller dog, so I guess you do have these random incidents that happens but it's regardless of the neighbourhood. Oh & also, I know if a "irresponsible couple" who owned a beautiful male golden retreiver & it attacked a JRT that he grew up with over a ball. The most outrageous of it all is that the ball belong to the JRT & the golden decided that he wants the ball too. Why do I say the owners (mainly the male) were irresponsible? He asked me if I ever need to reduce the number of cats in my house I should invite him & the goldie over for dinner & the goldie will take care of it! I'm sure you can guess what I did. I stopped going to the park the same time as him & if he should show up, I leave with my dogs.
Another incident was when one of my dogs was about 1, she walked pass a small dog & without any warning she snapped at my dog. She drew blood & we went to had to go to the vet cos the bite was just around her eyes. The owner apologised saying her dog is very possessive over her ball & she thought my dog was going for it. I was furious cos she too agreed that my dog was just walking by but mayB a little too close for her dog's comfort. There wasn't even any warning; like you know how a dog will snarl a little to warn the other dog?! Nothing, she just went for it.
Anyway, I don't want to turn this into a doggie park/doggie attack thread. So there you go, it's not only Dobbies or Rotties that can do damages, any dog with crazy/irresponsible owners will attack.

Yes sherbourne and wellesely is 'sketchy'.
but dangerous? Absolutely not.
It's not yorkville or King west, but there are many excellent ammenities if your not completely obsessed to aesthetics.
Yes, you will see a few crack heads, Transvestite prostuties, and the usual 'thugged' out image kids try to project. But in general, there are Lots of kids and families that live in the area and always a high traffic area.
