Washer/Dryer in Condo

Does anyone know if a built in washer/dryer in a Condo needs some kind of floor drain or water catch/membrane to protect against leakage? Thanks in Advance

Voltz, is right, but you can never be to over cautious! ;-) The washer drains into a drainage pipe, so there is a possibility of leakage if its not fasten securely or there is a premature failing in the water supply hose lines, etc,....that could cause a flood. Periodic inspection of all water and drain lines are encouraged as a homeowner to prevent a "surprise" leak.

Was hoping to have a floor drain installed just in case but, way too expensive. Has anyone ever put a floor drain in or some means of catching and removing water if something went wrong?

I don't know if this exists but maybe you can get a switch installed on the floor that if it detect water it cuts power to the washer immediately.

If there is no floor drain for the washer (better be for any unit above the basement, including second floors of houses as well). make sure the shut-off values are easily accessible. If not accessible, do so, before the hose bursts due to the water pressure as they age.

And shut off the tapes after you use the washer.

In a typical high rise condo this would require having it embedded in the concrete slab during construction and running a pipe in the slab to the nearest drain, this would be very expensive to get the builder to do even if they agreed to do it, and that is very unlikely

Our condo has no such drain, the floor is solid concrete/ceramic tile. However the shut-off taps are right beside the washer. We make it a habit to turn the taps on before we use the washer, then turn them off again right after. Since we only run the washer when we're home, that should minimize the impact of any leak should one happen, because we'd notice it quite quickly.

But, regardless, buy condo insurance! And make sure to ask specifically about flood/leak protection because it is not always included in the base coverage and could be a pretty devastating expense if your water leakage damaged other units.

I have a two-in-one ventless washer/dryer, without a drain. Last year a sprung a leak, and flooded my condo. It sucked.
