VIVA + York Region Transit

Don't follow VIVA too much. Are there still plans to construct a BRT along Major Mackenzie? Be nice to have a rapid transit connection between Maple GO and Richmond Hill GO. Essentially connecting the Barrie and RH GO lines.
It would also connect to Mount Joy GO (or possibly a new GO station at 48/Major Mac), adding the Stouffville line to that list.

Plans for any BRT on MM are typically limited between Jane and Leslie. While there are maps that show ideas for extension east and west, that will happen a long time from now.

Sylvia has been lobbying Brampton to have the Bovaird BRT plans continue to at least Highway 50, which should enhance the Major Mac West extension numbers.

YRT is providing some additional service for the Taylor Swift Eras Tour, namely:
  • There will be a shuttle that will run express between Finch Terminal and the Richmond Hill Centre.
  • Extra service on route 20, Viva Orange and Viva Purple, with extended hours on the Viva routes.
  • Additional staff at the Richmond Hill Centre, Finch Terminal, and SmartVMC Terminal.
  • Some Mobility On-Request Paratransit vehicles will be on standby to provide service if needed.

The express from Finch to Richmond Hill should be a normal thing.

Looks like YRT is installing new displays at VIVA stops. Unfortunately these seem to already be unreliable - these two pictures were taken at 4:24, one of the displays is stuck at 2:38 pm.

The displays appear to be e-ink/e-paper based on the way they refresh.

The choice to use 24 hour time and AM/PM notation is an interesting one.

Didn't know we can actually step backward:

York Regional Transit machines will soon stop taking debit or credit cards to help ‘streamline operations’

No plans to stop taking cash fares, transit authority says.

York Regional Transit lets riders pay for a single fare with credit and debit cards at its ticket vending machines across the region.

But that changes on Jan. 1, 2025.

PRESTO machines that accept debit and credit have been installed at terminals and vivastations, so removing debit and credit options on ticket machines will help “streamline operations while maintaining customer service,” the transit authority announced on Dec. 6.

YRT added it has no plans to remove the ticket machines, so riders will still be able to use them to pay cash fares, provided they have exact change.

Tickets purchased through PRESTO, however, are cheaper than the $4.40 cash fares. People using debit or credit at ticket machines also pay $4.40 regardless of their age.

Tickets purchased through PRESTO are $4 for adults, $3.10 for youths and only $2.45 for seniors and children.

i think its them trying to funnel everyone to tap onto the presto machines which does the exact same thing. theres some logic to this.

TY for your efforts.

I simply cannot get over that as of today (before these next 'improvements'....... you have regular, scheduled service as infrequent as every 79M on an arterial road, in daytime hours.

Small victory to see that route get all its major weekend service periods sub 60M but that's still not a ridership building number, that really doesn't begin at all until 30M or better clock-face service, and it doesn't really rocket till 20M or better off-peak in all major periods.

Leslie doing a bit better, inching towardsthe 30M frequency weekend daytime, good to see Keele almost getting to 15M in rush-hour. But such a long, slow, slog to reasonable.

Passenger comfort shoult not be something that can be value engineered away. Yrts one redeeming quality is that they have pretty comfortable seat materials. If they go with cheap plastic to speed up cleaning that's something that cannot be accepted
Speaking from someone who’s city has a lot of bedbug issues, I won’t sit on upholstered bus seats here, they’re universally disgusting. If the difference between plastic and upholstery is critical for a bus trip, it’s really a clear sign the bus route is far too slow.

In Hamilton, our plastic bus seats are pretty comfortable.
