VIA Rail

Today's VIA Nos 67/79 featured the augmented Set 12/7 consist with 32 axles total. The first use of this set since its June 3 test. Despite departing Montreal 28 minutes late, apparently on an unplanned basis, with its CN-approved axle count and track speed, it only lost another 17 minutes all the way to Toronto, arriving only (!) 45 minutes late. Could this be the only non-doublavay Venture run on the CN Kingston Sub since last October's CN-imposed crossing speed reductions that was able to operate at normal speeds? I think so. Is this better than tacking on two stainless-steel cars for Ventures to drag around? Yes. Did I suggest that back in October and wonder why VIA took so long to see things my way? Also yes. Railfans are flocking trackside to see if they can spot any discernible difference, requiring the use of both hands to count! Enjoy!!

Interesting that even if the report on groups.io was right about 2211-7cars being disassembled was right at the time, the inference drawn that the testing was being abandoned was clearly not.

So you're suggesting they have a plan? I am seriously wondering if this augmented consist revenue run is a direct response to the outcome of the Quebec Superior Court case i.e why now? Just like the buffer car situation, it again has to be citizen science to advance theories rather than VIA clearly enunciating what they're doing with their brand-new trains!

VIA told to “propose their own cuts”

9bn for defence and cutting the CBC and VIA feels like Carney’s version of Trudeau’s pipeline - it ain’t gonna make Alberta love him any more than they did JT
Something similar happened in 2012 (when the Canadian was cut from 3 to 2 tph outside the summer season), but at two trains per week passing through Alberta and three trains per week terminating at its Western-most edge, I‘m not sure what VIA could possibly be cutting in Alberta…

Not local service - just the budget of federal public services generally.

VIA's first augmented 'ajoutay' Venture consist in service this week. Went bad-order but may make a return?
It's wild to hear that people are claiming the Chargers were never intended to operate with 7 coaches. Like you mentioned, there had always been proposed configurations with 7 coaches.

I'm sure acceleration is underwhelming with the longer consist, but the Toronto-Montreal express trains don't make very many stops anyway. With the P+ speed profile, the slow acceleration shouldn't cost too much time compared to a 5-coach set. Certainly far less than the time cost of the crossing restrictions.

If only we could get more of the delivered trains into service. .

It’s a locohaul trainset. Other than coupling configurations, it should be possible to make them as long as you want, to the point where the loco literally can’t pull any more or the HEP bus can’t provide any more. If an F59PH can pull and power 10 GO bilevels (as they did pre MP40s) then a 2020s Siemens loco shouldn’t sweat a 7 car trainset surely, albeit with acceleration impacts.

There was a certain amount of this chat in Ireland when the 22000 class DMU was delivered in 3 and 6 car setups, and there was an assumption on boards like this for a long time that “it couldn’t be done” to run 4/5/7 car consists - but some years later it was. Feels a bit premature to assume at this point that Venture has any such restriction, and given that Siemens has personnel in MMC there would surely be zero chance anything is happening there which Siemens hasn’t agreed to (unlike CN who don’t seem to look out the window at their own rail lines) .
