Sure, they can, but if we are talking about Siemens trainsets and the contract includes maintenance and parts (as it does with VIA’s order), then the trainsets will have to visit a Siemens maintenance facility on a regular (e.g., weekly) basis…No.
Again, there is a contract shop in Sudbury that is contracted to deal with all of the light running maintenance for the RDCs. They can easily do the same for any locos and coaches that get stationed there.

The fantasy that a lot of people went to were the new Siemens units.(I followed down that rabbit hole too.) My guess is the next brand new equipment the route gets will be whatever the rest of the LDF gets whenever that is ordered.

But I would assume that things like cleaning, stocking, toilet emptying, etc. will be done on a slightly more frequent basis, and thus won't need Siemens there.

A planning rule at VIA seems to be that all cycles have to visit a VIA maintenance center at least once per week. The three exceptions are of course Churchill (where a cycle takes 9 days), the Skeena and the route I don’t dare to mention again, of which neither connects with a VIA maintenance centre. Could they not take the existing facilities and have them based out of there with the same rotation? If anything, this makes the LDF renewal make even more sense. The more standard the fleet is,t he easier it is to rotate things through for maintenance. Take a coach for example. I guess that VIA’s quest to standardize its fragmented fleet will face challenges for its non-corridor operations, which doesn’t bode well for its long-overdue non-corridor fleet renewal. Do you have an idea where Amtrak maintains its detached services, like its “Heartland Flyer” from Fort Worth to Oklahoma City?

I can assure you that nobody at VIA wastes much of their time thinking about this service, as everything which could be done (except for reducing its frequency or eliminating it all together) would require additional funding VIA won’t receive.I'm pretty sure more time is spent on this thread talking about Sudbury-White River than by VIA Execs. At least I hope that's the case. If not, they need to be audited for mismanagement.
