Also, the lecture hall seats look terribly uncomfortable. Why isn't there any padding on the bottom (like Instructional Centre)?
Those seats are the new standard for basic lecture halls on all U of T campuses. Many newly renovated downtown rooms have them (e.g. sidney smith hall, medical sciences), as does the new Myhal centre. U of T must get a good deal on them or they must be cheap and easy to replace.
I've tried them out. Surprisingly they're not really that uncomfortable, and you get a lot of mobility in them (the chairs rotate, and can move forward and backward from the table).
The more formal auditoriums, where there are often academic events / conferences / talks tend to have better seating
