University Avenue Triangle

They want to turn it into an oasis for tourists. New York has Central Park but we'll have the Triangle. Maybe they'll deck over the ramp and add a piano.

In a perfect world it'd be reasonable to be critical of the city for not having at least identified such a site for aesthetic improvements - have they ever done so? There's substantial 'Clean & Beautiful' plantings a stone's throw away. It seems the spot'll get a Fairmont-related monument, a suitable reward for taking the initiative.

Great, another piano reference.

What do you think Fairmont would want to put there? The original notice indicates something that pays tribute to our rail heritage. Likely it will be a grassy knoll with some weird modern art piece that is supposed to evoke images of rail, but not look anything like rail.

Kids get to name the place. That's a good PR move.

Yes, a railroad-related modern art thing with a big Fairmont plaque sounds probable. There'll also be token flowers and a token low concrete wall (the "oasis").

It would be really nice to see some sort of fountain, plantings along with some nice tall pines or trees blocking the view of the parking garage entrance from the east and south side. Imagine placing some large pieces of rock like in Yorkville but of Granite with a path and seating carved into the rock. Then have a fountain towards the trees flowing down the rock towards the southeastern corner. Could be quite beautiful.

Perhaps something like the Chinese Railroad Workers Monument (at Cityplace, just south of the railway lands)

There is a blurb in the Metro today.
Looks like it is going to be grass, a sidewalk and park benches. Just what this site DOESNT need.

Blah. Boring.

Rendering looks fairly basic - plantings, paving, benches - although a nice little urban improvement.

The project is designed by MBTW Group, the triangle is expected
to be completed sometime next year. School children will be responsible for finding the recaptured space a new name. Groundbreaking on the project took place yesterday afternoon.

Love the idea of rogue space on the loose, gaucho's on horseback riding it down, roping it with a lariat, branding it with a triangular Fairmont mark, little children renaming it, and releasing it again into the wild ...
