TTC: Streetcar Network

Construction Notice for the Russell Cathouse Carhouse.

Saw it posted in a local Leslieville FB group where some have concerns about noise, traffic, and local business impacts.

So, people who live near the Cathouse Carhouse are concerned about construction noise, traffic and local business impacts while the facility is upgraded. How do they think construction happens, everywhere?

I'm puzzled what local business impacts there'd be from the work at Russell. Both Queen and Eastern (and even Connaught) have had their tracks and switches upgraded in recent years - so this won't impact any streets.

All I can think of is a reduction of local retail sales from having less TTC staff on site! :)

Given what business are in the area, there is no impact on them with this work. You have the landscape business next to the yard who is most likely doing the most bitching due to the dust.

TTC crews are a tip of an ice berg for local business and will have no impact on them if they are there or not.

You have a larger number of residents than business who are doing the bitching like any other project in the city.

Trackwork on the Lakeshore and Kipling intersection has been completed as of Friday Sep 2nd, and Lakeshore is fully reopened to traffic.

Work is still continuing at Kipling Loop and Kipling remains closed just north of the intersection.

The TTC seems to have created a new streetcar track yard on Unwin Avenue just east of the road to the Outer Harbour Marina. They fenced off and 'paved' the site about 4 months ago and it now has several trailers and loads of streetcar rail and 'stuff'. For a while they were using the former parking area of the soap factory @ East Harbour for this so I assume this is the semi-permanent replacement.

Update as of today:

The City’s contractor expects to have crews begin work on College Street, at Spadina Avenue towards University Avenue the week of September 12, 2022. An additional crew will start working the week of September 19, 2022 towards Augusta Avenue. TTC crews also undertake rail welding work the week of September 12, 2022, west of Spadina Avenue. Affected residents and businesses will receive further details from the TTC.

Starting the week of September 12, 2022, the City of Toronto and Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will begin several infrastructure upgrades on College Street. These upgrades include:
  • Replacement of streetcar tracks: Bathurst Street to Bay Street (excluding the intersections at Bathurst Street, Spadina Avenue, McCaul Street and Bay Street)
  • Installation of separated cycle tracks: Manning Avenue to Bay Street (elevated from Manning Avenue and Spadina Avenue and at grade from Spadina Avenue to Bay Street)
  • Integrated TTC and cycle streetcar platforms: Manning Avenue to Spadina Avenue
  • Pedestrian safety improvements at various locations: Manning Avenue to Spadina Avenue
The planned TTC track replacement work on College Street from Bathurst Street and Bay Street provided the City an opportunity to rethink the existing roadway design and consider changes to improve safety for all road users. The safety improvements will include upgrading the existing bike lanes on College Street with physically separated cycle tracks, integrated TTC and cycle streetcar platforms, curb extensions at specific intersecting streets, and raised intersections at certain locations. In addition, the number of bicycle parking spaces will be increased and conditions will be improved for existing street trees to promote better growth.

As announced last week, the TTC are now putting in the concrete 'base' for the new streetcar tracks on Wellington between Scott & Yonge and, when done, this will complete the rebuilding of the track on Wellington. As they really only started this work yesterday, I suspect it will not be done until later next week.

ROAD RECONSTRUCTION_ SCOTT STREET / WELLINGTON STREET EAST

The City of Toronto will be reconstructing TTC track allowance on Wellington Street East between Scott Street and Yonge Street. To complete this work Scott Street will be closed at north limit of Wellington Street. Right-turns from westbound Wellington Street to northbound Scott Street will be restricted from September 6 to September 19. Through traffic on Scott Street will also be restricted. Road reconstruction will also be taking place at Front Street and Church Street on the south traffic island. Work on the traffic island will take place from September 6th until September 12th

They are building the north sidewalk east of Yonge St and there is part of a platform for TTC in place at Yonge now.

No OS up in the area yet.

They have done LOTS of excavation and concrete work since these photos. As noted above, this morning they were getting ready to pour the concrete base for the new tracks between Scott & Yonge.

Shot the photo on Aug 20 and thought I shot it again on Sept 02 that had forming for the sidewalk as we pass it, but did not.
