So technically anything that runs on rails or a fixed guideway (essentially 1D) is part of an integrated system, whereas anything that can go "from anywhere to anywhere" (2D) can be said to exist in a "vacuum".That's the thing, these things don't exist in a vacuum - it's a system. It's all integrated.
Not sure though why weight plays such a big part in the vehicles' design life, as there are indeed some examples of subway cars in other cities that lasted 40–50 years and were more lightweight than TTC rolling stock, i.e. Montreal, Stockholm (yes Montreal is 100% underground but that's not the case with Stockholm which is >50% above ground).
