That's the thing, these things don't exist in a vacuum - it's a system. It's all integrated.

So technically anything that runs on rails or a fixed guideway (essentially 1D) is part of an integrated system, whereas anything that can go "from anywhere to anywhere" (2D) can be said to exist in a "vacuum".

Not sure though why weight plays such a big part in the vehicles' design life, as there are indeed some examples of subway cars in other cities that lasted 40–50 years and were more lightweight than TTC rolling stock, i.e. Montreal, Stockholm (yes Montreal is 100% underground but that's not the case with Stockholm which is >50% above ground).

Want to make something more durable and last longer? Engineers usually start by adding more material, which adds weight. More weight in the rolling stock affects the rails and structure - rails will wear out faster, and structure may have to be built heavier to compensate, or have more frequent inspections. And so on it goes.

Stockholm's rolling stock is built to a smaller loading gauge then Toronto's. I would hope it's lighter, they need less material to build each car.

That is true, but the same can be said about IRT rolling stock, yet it still weighs the same as ours, or slightly heavier (compared to Stockholm, IRT loading gauge is slightly smaller, yet the weight is significantly higher). Despite the lower weight/size ratio, some Stockholm cars lasted up to 50 years like many NYC cars (the longest-lasting, at 53, were retired in 2023), while others lasted between 30 and 40 like most TTC cars.

To add, this reminds me of those arguments that are used for gun control in the vein of "the only one who can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun".

How about the police do their jobs and then no one has to fight back against attackers on the TTC? Any society that relies on vigilante justice is one that has already failed.

Exactly. Reminds me of this incident from a couple years ago: Toronto subway stabbing victim recounts violent incident

The victim took it personally that a guy who was loudly playing music sat behind him, and when asking the guy to turn it down didn't work, he started arguing with the music playing guy and then started punching. Turns out the other guy had a knife and started stabbing him. I feel bad for the stabbing victim but damn, try not taking things so personally or even just moving down the train (it was on Line 1). Embolden people to fear others, "defend" themselves, allow for the carry of weapons, etc? Things will get ugly real fast.

Every so often I find myself wondering at what point in human history it became socially acceptable to behave like a snotty brat that doesn't care about anyone but themselves. You see this a thousand times daily in the form of a thousand micro shithead moves. Yelling at a shop clerk, putting your feet up on chairs outside of your own home, listening to music and videos without headphones in a public space... Why is this a thing and when did it become a thing?
