TTC streetcar service changes coming to King St.

September 24, 2018

Starting Sunday, Oct. 7, the TTC is making two major route changes that will improve streetcar service along the busy King St. corridor.

In order to provide more reliable scheduled service for its 80,000 daily riders, the 504 King route will be split into two branches (see attached maps):
- 504A King (Dundas W Stn - Distillery) via Roncesvalles Ave., King St. and Cherry St.
- 504B King (Broadview Stn - Dufferin Gate) via Broadview Ave., King St. and Dufferin St.

The 514 Cherry service is being discontinued as a standalone route with service being replaced by the new King routes. This change is being made to provide more clarity for customers traveling along King St. with all streetcars designated as 504 King, with respective A or B branches indicated.

The change means the two shorter branches of 504 King will service the King Street Pilot area and reduce the need for short turns as a delay on one end of either branch is far less likely to affect service throughout the entire route. Both routes will service King St. between Dufferin and Sumach streets.

Reliability is also improved by changing terminal points. Currently, Dundas West and Broadview stations can only fit one low-floor streetcar at the stations' platforms at a time, while multiple streetcars can be located at the Dufferin Gate and Distillery loops, helping service recover more efficiently.

Both branches of the 504 King will be served by new accessible low-floor streetcars. Temporarily, there will be a need to supplement some rush hour service with older streetcars until the TTC receives additional new streetcars in the coming months. Consistent with the TTC's commitment to our neighbours, older streetcars will not service the Distillery Loop due to noise.

Quick facts:
- During the busiest times in the morning, 42 low-floor streetcars will service King St. - 22 on 504A and 20 on 504B
- Streetcars will operate every 2-3 minutes during the morning rush hour
- With full low-floor operation, capacity is increased to almost 3,000 people per hour, per direction from the current 2,500.
- In the morning rush, full route trip times will be 108 minutes for 504A and 98 minutes for 504B. The current trip time for the 504 King is 122 minutes.

So 25% of the TTC's ultimate low floor fleet when deployed in rush hour will be on King Street? I feel like that is sort of ridiculous - what is the status of those 60 extra streetcars again?

This is also good news for the Distillery loop - previously service was so infrequent it was usually faster to walk up to King from the Distillery and get on at Parliament. With every other car now turning at Distillery, it'll make more sense to wait at the loop.

Don't expect to see those extra cars until Ford is gone, since he will not pickup 1/3 the cost of them. The earliest they can be order at this time is 2023.

Why shouldn't 504 not see a good chunk of the fleet when it carries 80,000's plus riders a day, with more to come??

This is what we get for not doing a 1:1 from day one.

Unless something has changed, do expect to see a few extra cars as part of the damages for delays by Bombardier in delivery.

It won't be anywhere near 60 extra cars, but somewhere between 5-15 seems likely.

TTC to pull an all-nighter for Nuit Blanche

September 26, 2018

Nuit Blanche is back in Toronto this weekend and this year the TTC is playing an even bigger role. For the first time, the annual all-night contemporary art event will extend to Scarborough with art installations in most Line 3 stations.

To ensure Torontonians have every opportunity to explore the vinyl installations, fare will be free at any Line 3 station between 7 p.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday.

The TTC wants to help customers make the most of the festival and will once again extend subway service on Lines 1, 2 and 3. The subway will run every 10-15 minutes on Lines 1, 2 and 3 from 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning until regularly scheduled service resumes at 8 a.m.

Buses on the 300 Bloor-Danforth and 320 Yonge routes will run all night as scheduled. Line 4 Sheppard will operate on normal Saturday night/Sunday morning schedules.

Nuit Blanche festivities will result in diversions on the 6 Bay and 501/301 Queen routes. Customers are advised to check ttc.ca and follow @TTCnotices for more details and real-time service updates.

On Sunday morning, those participating in CIBC's Run for the Cure can also take advantage of the added subway service on Lines 1, 2 and 3.

The following surface routes will be diverting to accommodate the event:
- 5 Avenue Road
- 94 Wellesley
- 505 Dundas
- 506 Carlton
- 300 Bloor-Danforth

They're not running the subways all night like they have the previous few years?

I guess every 15 minutes from 1:30-8:00 am is not all night service?? Line 3 has never run all night until this year.

Fun fact: I once played the sax with the Shuffle Demons. They were the musical guests for a conference at the Allstream Centre (now Beanfield Centre) when I worked there. Spadina Bus is surprisingly easy to play. I told them I was a fan of the song Spadina Bus and they let me play one song with them while I was working.

Streetcar network upgrades at St Clair West Station

September 27, 2018

Starting late tomorrow night, Fri., Sept. 28, TTC crews are working to update overhead electrical wiring to support pantograph operation for low floor streetcars at St Clair West Station. As a result, the 512 St Clair streetcar route will bypass St Clair West Station both ways for the month of October. During that time, customers can board and disembark at Tweedsmuir Ave. and St. Clair Ave., W. or at Bathurst St. and St. Clair Ave. W.

This weekend only, the 512 St Clair streetcar will be replaced with buses servicing stops outside the subway station on St. Clair Ave. W. The 512 St Clair replacement buses will service curbside stops only, not the right-of-way.

The 33 Forest Hill, 90 Vaughan and 126 Christie will also board and disembark outside the station throughout the weekend.

Pantograph is hardware mounted on the roofs of streetcars that collect power through contact with overhead lines. All TTC streetcars routes are gradually upgrading from the current trolley pole system to more reliable pantograph operation.

On Monday morning, Oct. 1, buses will return to servicing stops inside St Clair West Station.

I am surprised. When they did work on the ROW at St. Clair west they had passengers disembark at the bottom of the ramp and walk into the station. I recall getting off at a temporary stop at the bottom of the ramp.
