TTC hosts 2018 Underground Freedom Train Ride

July 31, 2018

This evening, the TTC will host the sixth annual midnight Underground Freedom Train Ride commemorating Emancipation Day on Aug. 1. The event, which has been attended by up to 1,200 people in past years, is presented by A Different Booklist bookstore and is symbolic of the role of the Underground Railroad in Canadian history. Celebrations include singing, poetry readings, drum playing and remarks by the African Canadian Heritage Association.

"Emancipation Day is an opportunity to explore and celebrate the rich African-Canadian history that has helped build our city. It is also a day to recognize their struggle for human rights," says Mayor Tory. "Thank you to the TTC for supporting this event which allows Canadians of all backgrounds to learn about the incredible history of African Canadians as builders, advocates, and people who defended Canada in many challenging times and who lead in so many ways."

"The TTC is proud to commemorate Emancipation Day with the annual Underground Freedom Train Ride," says Chair Colle. "This symbolic subway ride on the TTC celebrates liberation and freedom, and is an important event in our city not to be missed."

When: Tue., July 31 - Wed., Aug. 1, 2018
Where: TTC Line 1 Yonge-University, Union to Sheppard West stations
Start time: Attendees will meet at Union Station at approximately 10:30 p.m. The train arrives at Sheppard West Station at approximately 12:10 a.m.

The 511 is being replaced by a bus again?!! Agh why didn't the TTC just complete this work during the last massive shutdown?

It's more an issue of not having enough streetcars. Even if the entire initial order of 204 new streetcars was here, that wouldn't be enough to run the entire streetcar system, so they'd need to put buses on some routes - Bathurst is the one that gets hit because it has the lowest ridership out of the regular surface routes (not including the 509, which can't be run by buses because of the tunnel).

Good answer, but that wasn't the reason given by the TTC as it was for 506/505. Do they have so little rolling stock, whether old or new, that 3 lines have to be taken out of operation? Seems like half the system is down at any given time.

Well there are about 80 new streetcars in operation and almost all of the approx. 50 ATRVs (the double cars) have been scrapped as have quite a few of the CLRVs. They really are VERY short of serviceable streetcars so it's just as well that several lines or parts of lines are currently impassable to streetcars and they are using buses - as they would have to do even if they had spares.
