TTC: Dufferin Station Modernization (TTC, U/C)

News Release

TTC's Dufferin Station closed this weekend

November 19, 2014

Dufferin Station will be closed to the public on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23, with subway trains not stopping at the station so the Toronto Transit Commission can complete work on the Dufferin Station modernization project, making the station the 33rd TTC subway station to be fully accessible. The station will re-open on Monday, November 24, at 6 a.m.

Subway trains will bypass Dufferin Station, but shuttle buses will operate on Bloor St. W., between Lansdowne and Ossington stations for customer convenience. The 29 Dufferin and 402 Parkdale community bus will not be affected by the closure.

Work this weekend will include finishes on new stairs, ceilings and floors, and testing the three new elevators that, along with an accessible fare gate and automatic sliding doors, will make Dufferin Station accessible to all customers.

Over the last four years, Dufferin Station has undergone a significant transformation, including expansion of the station building and indoor waiting area, second exits from both platforms, a new laneway entrance on the west side, a new staircase, modern wall, ceiling, floor and stair finishes, new windows for more natural light, bicycle parking, canopies over the sidewalks, a green roof and new public art.

TTC senior managers will join Councillor Ana Bailao to greet customers at the station entrance on Wednesday, November 26 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

The TTC thanks customers, the local community and businesses for their patience during construction.

Good news, Dufferin Station entrances to open Monday. Bad news, Dufferin Station to be closed Saturday and Sunday.

I'm less eager to prettify our stations and more eager to fill our massive reliable rapid transit deficit so people can get around in a reasonable amount of time.

I'm fine with Eglinton stations being relatively utilitarian & understated. The new Union station areas & platform already look good enough to me.

Having said that, Dufferin does look good now ;)

Stations should look interesting like those in the photos above to relieve the monotony of underground transit. I like Montreal's system since the stations are unique and have genuine artistic details all over, and they don't even look like they tried hard to be impressive. It's boring to see the same public washroom station 5-20 times per commute. I hope the Eglinton stations are unique and interesting.

Montreal's stations use typical construction materials (brick, tile, much more exposed concrete than Toronto's stations) but uses them in creative ways. A different artist was tasked to help with the design of each station, so each one is unique.

I don't think it's necessary for every station to be drab and utilitarian to save on costs. It's possible to design an attractive space without breaking the bank or doing anything too complicated/exotic.

A different architect was used - which lead to different artists ...

This is the same as Toronto did for the current Spadina extension.

As opposed to the cookie-cutter approach done in Toronto historically.

I think that's what was done when the Spadina line was built. I'd say it turned out well.

At one point they were thinking of cutting art all together on the original Spadina line, but they got the private sector to contribute. Some of the art was criticized on completion for being amateurish.

It would be interesting if Mt. Dennis station were full of photographs,

That would be a good way to reflect on the area's history

Oakwood station were to look Caribbean, Bathurst (Crosstown LRT) station were to look Jewish

I can think of so many ways that could go wrong.

No wonder why Glencairn and Yorkdale's were removed so early (and the art being faded and too expensive to repair, respectively, were probably excuses to remove them).

Exactly. And the possible graffiti that may arise on those walls. Why create more division in this city? Every group will be asking for something at their neighbourhood subway

So, to go along with the front page story, here's a reasonably thorough tour of Dufferin Station, but even more photos will be up on my Flickr page soon.
