Tory plans for U.S.-style prisons slammed in report

Actually, that is why we as a people have a justice system in the manner that we have. We don't allow for lynch mobs, and we don't have juries that assign punishment (they are the finders of fact - but punishment is metered out by the judge based on the law). The primary purpose of our prisons is to protect society - by removing those that must be removed from society, and to act as a deterrent for those that need it. Prisons are a necessary evil to protect society from those that we need protecting from.

and this is a good message for society to send. societies that dish out revenge indirectly teach that revenge is a good thing and individuals could be influenced by this to take revenge for being wronged. they will apply the revenge stance to everyday issues, things that are totally trivial. our society teaches separation & isolation so instead of a husband blowing his wife's head off with a shotgun if he finds her cheating, if he has been influenced by our society, he'll get a divorce and never talk to her again. now you might say, if that's the logic then wouldn't the husband build an isolation chamber for her and keep her prisoner? nope, unless he's got a mental disorder, he wouldn't go to that extent. it's too time consuming and a normal person would come to their senses before they even buy a bag of cement. the hotheadedness that results from being wronged is something that is usually short lived. revenge is something that only takes a second to accomplish. this is what makes revenge soo dangerous.

a society that keeps its cool influences its citizens to keep its cool. maybe murderers get to live the rest of their lives instead of being hung but citizens won't be influenced with this lynching mentality and then apply it to situations in their everyday lives. this could reduce crime overall.

Come on now. The best way to avoid these US-style prisons would be to execute criminals instantly, no prison time necessary. Yeah, even white-collar criminals like Conrad Black, Garth Drabinsky, et al. Give'em the guillotine

The US has the death penalty, but those sentenced seemed to be forced to stay in prison so long, it is kind of pointless. If you have the death penalty, the executions should be done right away and save taxpayer money and reduce the burden on the environment. Otherwise, there is no point in executions.

Tell that to the many many innocent people who have found themselves awaiting their death in American prisons for crimes they did not commit.

Very often, these individuals are engaged in an appeal of the sentence. There is no way to summarily cut that process off (nor should there be) until it has been properly exhausted.

I'm not sure how the relatively few people on death row present themselves as a burden to the environment.

The reason why a person has so many appeals and stays open to them is that there is no way to undo an injustice - none at all - so if the death penalty is to be applied - then all avenues for the condemned have to be travelled first before you execute the prisoner - which makes the death sentence not as economical as life in prison.
