People window shop and or visit food court. Often I go for the food court

Going to the food court is making a purchase.

Maybe not a purchase worthy of a free parking spot. You'd have to average out how much the average yorkdale shopper spends vs someone who just uses t food court.

At least La Paloma in the food court has free gelato samples.

Ren Ten, Teavana, and DavidsTea have tea samples as well.

Kernels has popcorn samples.

With regards to parking, there's always Lawrence Square (though you would have to walk approximately one kilometre to Yorkdale, but hey, there's plenty of space and it's free as long as you enter Lawrence Square first)

the lease is coming up. Who knows if they extend it.

No. Only one lot is for commuters and it's been closed for some time now.
The rest of the lots are monitored, and if they don't see you in the mall after a certain time period and your car hasn't left, you'll be ticketed.

There are cameras as you enter the parking lot. It matches your face to your plates. Then the interior cameras do periodic checks.

I parked at Yorkdale in 2015 for a Jays playoff game and didn't get a ticket. Parked close to the Indigo.

Besides unless its a City of Toronto ticket you don't have to pay it.

The max time is probably set to catch daily commuters. They also now have staff at the roads leading into the lot when special events are happening downtown.

Besides unless its a City of Toronto ticket you don't have to pay it.

Just risk being towed the next time you park there.

You would have much more success of not being ticketed if you were to park at Lawrence Square instead (and there's always plenty of space there and a few steps to the subway).

Yorkdale has an interesting layout for storage areas (the basement below each retailer).

That would make second-story additions throughout the mall much more difficult, unless the individual stores are at least two storeys tall, which is true for some stores.
