Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) has submitted two applications to amend the former City of Etobicoke Zoning Code to permit expanded gaming on the Woodbine Racetrack lands: one for the existing grandstand building; and one for a new Gaming District to be located to the northeast of the existing grandstand. These applications propose amendments to existing site specific Zoning By-law 864-2007 to add live table gaming as a permitted use at 555 Rexdale Boulevard. All other land use permissions would remain unaltered, however minor technical amendments are proposed for the performance standards in the Gaming District as they relate to parking.

This report reviews and recommends approval of the applications to amend the Zoning Bylaw. The addition of live table games into the current gaming framework on the lands is appropriate as live table games are considered to be compatible with the existing gaming uses and the addition of live table games would not materially alter the use of the lands.

And that's a recommendation for approval of the zoning bylaw amendment and the draft plan of subdivision, with a proviso that 12 conditions are also met regarding its implementation. That's a more complicated than usual agreement, but it's a more complicated than normal and much larger than normal site. The approval won't allow any particular building onsite to go forward; they will all need Site Plan Approval as well. SPA applications are under review for the first phase buildings currently.

i heard a rumor from a source that a big consortium is looking for available land somewhere in the City of Toronto to build an NHL size arena, just wondered if it would fit somewhere here but i doubt it, i'm more tempted to believe they'd be more inclined at the future Bombardier lands in Downsview, again it could just be bar gossip?

Every 5-10 years there comes a random business group who proposes and floats their pie in the sky idea of building a 2nd NHL sized rink in the city, with fantasies of attracting a 2nd Toronto pro hockey team. The idea sits around for a couple months, the media gives the group the attention they want, and the group quietly goes away once the NHL shoots down their idea.

Dont read anything into it, it's not happening and certainly not on these lands. If it *ever* were to happen, it would be around the Downsview Park lands. Personally I think it would be appropriate reserve land to build another arena around there since it's the city's last massive plot of land remaining, and once that's gone there's no comparable spot to build an arena in the future.

Unless in the Portlands, but no new NHL franchise or defunct NHL team would want to be that close to the Leafs
 
Of course Mike Layton and a couple other left-wing councillors would rather see 31 million dollars come from some other source than have a full fledged casino that might fuel a gambling addiction upon us, ..haha god help us all:rolleyes:

Great Canadian Gaming, the company planning to revamp Woodbine Racetrack, promises to provide hundreds of jobs to local residents and pay the city as much as $31 million a year if it’s allowed to proceed with its casino expansion.

But that’s not enough, says Councillor Mike Layton, who worries about the risks a casino would pose to the Rexdale community, like fuelling gambling addictions and draining the local economy.

“These are jobs, but jobs at what expense?” he said.

Why? Because people travel from a long way to go to tourist destinations, and until such time as the Finch West LRT meets GO Transit at a new station at the southeast corner of this site, and then a shuttle system is set up to get people from there to the racetrack and casino area, the private vehicle/transit modal split is never going to climb beyond 80/20. I assume it's more like 98/2 currently. Don't kid yourself: this isn't downtown where all the transit focuses on.

Not with Union Station West / Pearson Transit Hub being planned for as a transit focus.

That's many years away, and there's still no chance that'll bump their model spilt enough to eliminate the need for parking. All the surface lots are destined to go as the site is redeveloped, so garages are where it'll be at here.

As a piece of the battle against climate warming, eliminating parking would help, especially with transit going to be available.
