East Wing news.

City Council on July 16 and 17, 2019 adopted the following:

1. City Council amend the 2019 - 2028 Approved Capital Budget and Plan for the Facilities, Real Estate, Environment and Energy program by adding a new capital project "Union Station East Wing" with total project cost of $20.0 million and cash flows of $2.5 million in 2019 and $17.5 million in 2020, to be funded by recoverable debt, repayable over 15 years, to complete base building and office fit-up work associated with Union Station East Wing.

2. City Council approve the plan from the Deputy City Manager, Corporate Services to utilize Union Station East Wing on an interim basis to rationalize spaces leased by the City from third party landlords which expire in 2020 and serve as swing space for office modernization projects.

3. City Council, in accordance with Section 71-11.1C of Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 71, Financial Control, amend Purchase Order Number 6030175 with NORR Limited, Architects and Engineers and increase the value of the contract by $850,000, net of all taxes and applicable charges, revising the current contract authority from $44,473,000, net of all taxes and applicable charges, up to a maximum value of $45,323,000, net of all taxes and applicable charges, to provide required additional base building architecture and engineering services for the East Wing Project.
 
I wonder how the people who have been exiting the northeast Great Hall doors to the subway (or to buildings beyond) have been changing their route today to avoid the weather. Some will immediately make a left down the ramp and back into the building.

It's great to see classic entrances with a little modern twist: It also looks like videoboards will be integrated (to indicate current train berthed at the platform)

Hopefully they readjust the "[8-9]" signage somehow, as that kind of .... "clashes"
-- Maybe remove them, and put one of them, to be hanging from ceiling in centre -- about 0.5 meter in front (same size, just hanging from ceiling), though that placement of that security camera is a bit inopportunistic for that.
-- Maybe make videoboards display the numbers permanently
-- Maybe display only one "[8-9]" towards the right, just above the Presto machine. Having two "[8-9]" is simply visual clutter at this stage now.
-- Etc.

It could have been worse. At least the right [8-9] sign doesn’t say [9-8]. ?

I think the 8-9 signs were what was up temporarily and will hopefully just be taken down soon!

City Council increase the 2019 Council Approved Capital Budget of Corporate Real Estate Management for the Union Station Revitalization Project by $154,638 gross, $0 net, with $0 debt impact, for the installation of interior lighting for the Great Hall of Union Station (WBS Element: CCA911-08), fully funded by Section 16 funds secured from the development agreement for 15 York Street (Source Account: XR3031).​
Summary
Authority is being sought to release Section 16 funds to Corporate Real Estate Management for the installation of heritage lighting for the Great Hall at Union Station.

Union Station is a National Historic Site of Canada and is included as one of the subject buildings of the Heritage Lighting Master Plan for Old Town Toronto. As a gateway site to the Old Town, the overall lighting strategy for Union Station has been identified an important component of the revitalization.

City Council approved funding in the 2014 Capital Budget and Plan for Facilities Management and Real Estate for heritage lighting of the Great Hall. Real Estate Services later awarded a contract to prepare a design and tender ready documents for the project.

The design implements the recommendations of the Heritage Lighting Master Plan for the Old Town to include Union Station as the western anchor of the plan, and create a strong visual identity for the Old Town to assist in enhancement as a neighbourhood and a destination.

A final design has been approved, and is ready to be tendered for fabrication and installation. The design recognizes the historic importance of the Great Hall and complements its historic character. After a value engineering process, additional funds are required to complete the project based on updated cost estimates of which $154,638.00 will be achieved through funds from development agreements.

This Motion is urgent as the tender for this project is tied to other restoration work in the Great Hall and to maintain the completion schedule for Union Station.​
 
This is not really Union station, ur close enough. Does anyone know when all those wooden hydro poles by Front and University will get replaced with something better? Its been like this for years. I thought it was something temporary.You would think this being such a high trafficked and tourist area, they would try to make the area presentable. The same thing with the cement blocks placed around the front entrance of Union Station. I also see them around Air Canada Centre and Rogers Centre. I know they were placed there to prevent trucks ramming into people but there has to be better solutions which look better. This is Toronto after all, I wouldn't be surprised if there is no plans to change them.

This is a component I have really been looking forward to. The existing Sodium (orange) lighting really is atrocious; and this is the most grand space in the station.
