The majorness of that remaining 4% -- the disrupted trains is key.

If it's just a 10 minute delay occuring only 4% of the time, and often on offpeak trains, big whoop.
But if 4 out of 100 trains are 2 hours late...and they are also the full ones....ouchey ouch!

surely the law of big numbers handles that....no? Is there a greater likelihood of these failures during peak times? when trains are full?

Lansdowne Bridge Work Continues this Weekend

UP Express service will be impacted

TORONTO: April 12, 2016 – As part of our plan to expand regional GO Transit service, we will be doing further work on Lansdowne Bridge this coming weekend. As a result of the construction work, UP Express service will be impacted this weekend including periods of 30 minute service and intermittent periods of rail shutdown. Airport travellers and local commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and check the website for service impacts and alternatives.

The work includes replacing two bridge spans on the north side of the Lansdowne Avenue Bridge as well as upgrading the bridge abutments. Bridge replacement construction will begin Friday April 15 until Sunday April 17 and can only be completed when there is minimal or no train activity.

When tracks for UP are shut down, airport customers will be able to catch a replacement bus service between Union and Pearson stations. Bus service will not be provided at Bloor or Weston Stations during rail shutdown. Customers should check the website for further details before heading out. Keep informed by following @UPexpress on Twitter or Facebook or by calling customer service at 1-844-438-6687.

We are making every effort to minimize the planned service disruption while we complete the necessary bridge work. Metrolinx appreciates customers’ patience and understanding.

Whatever wedding party group trying to catch Saturday night's Caribbean cruise departure from Port Liberty is going to be sorely dissapointed

Yes, typically. Just exaggerating both extremes, to show how the 4% breaks down, is important.

Let's not forget it's 4% after a certain amount of spread deemed acceptable by the organization, which is could be what, 15 minutes if one goes by the service guarantee? One should pull out the numbers and find out how many sigmas that would be.

Spotted an UP Express train going past Mimico Station this evening, while I was walking south on Royal York:

Stop by the Bloor Station to check it out and that fare cut to UPX is doing them good and bad for GO.

A Union UPX pull in, it was haft full at about 8:30 am and 10 minutes before the GO train. Over 2 dozen riders got on the UPX 2 car train. No one on the platform for the GO train when it pull in.

Was at Union at PM peak time and saw a 3 car UPX at the station with a VIA Rail coach for the eastbound train, a 1/4 of a car away from it and at the signal point. A 2 car UPX pull in after the other UPX train departed and was the same distance away as well.

Sounds, both, understandable and "net good" to me.......prior to the fare change at UP I don't think there ever would have be over 2 dozen Union bound people on that platform...so the UP reduction in fares has a attracted riders and not at all surprising that they are opting for the UP over GO (more frequent and more likely to get a seat).

Might as well make Union-bound GO trains go express past Weston and/or Bloor.

Especially if UPX EMUs theoretically end up the same as the 4-coach RER EMUs -- which might even happen, given the earlier mentioned researching drum118 was told to do about a 4-coach.

Save the poor Kitchener travellers a few minutes, although some must need to disembark ar Bloor?

NO!

People coming from west of Union might want to get off at Weston to switch to the quickest and cheapest rail connection to the airport....and Bloor has always been a busier drop off station than pick up station in the a.m. (reverse in p.m.) indicating people are using the station to access the BD subway.

Oh yes, that's true - I forgot about this.

Until the theoretical Pearson GO RER station (renamed Malton or Woodbine) someday. There can be multiple stopping plans with gaps to be sure, Kitchener going express past non-mobility-hubs but stopping at Pearson GO and Bloor GO. (Two hours is still nuts for Kitchener trains)

that might reduce the value of Weston as a stop for people from the west but Bloor needs (and will) grow in importance to keep a connection to BD and prevent people going to (and congesting) Union if their destination is further uptown.

Bloor needs to get proper Mobility Hub treatment already. UPX, TTC, GO/RER... Not to even remotely mention multiple carshares and the expanded bikeshare covers it.

Kitchener speed needs to be solved. I can see Kitchener trains eventually getting an "odd" stopping plan similar to certain Paris RER trains. Like skipping Bramalea (esp if electrification extends beyond) and Weston, but stopping at a theoretical Pearson Mobility Hub (maybe whichever ECLRT West reaches?) and Bloor Mobility Hub. Basically increases station spacing for the long haul Kitchener train. Local allstops will go to the MtPleasant/Bramalea trains.

It really speeds up the train. The fastest Lakeshore train is the Niagara seasonal train because of its odd stopping plan like this (stops at Burlington and Oakville but skips Appleby, Bronte, Mimico, Long Branch...) allowing longer sprints between stops. It does Union-Burlington in only 40 minutes, faster than express commuter GO trains. Those 2 hour Kitchener commutes are crazy and a solution is needed.

Which stations do we stop at or go express past? That is where the fights and disagreements begins...

UPX & RER EMU plan, infill station locations, Mobility-Hub-upgraded stations, the future Pearson Hub decision, and ECLRT West will affect this calculus...

^skipping a stop or two is not going to solve kitchener speed.....unless solve is defined as saving a few minutes.....the current express train from Bramalea skips 4 stops (Malton, Etobicoke North, Weston & Bloor) and saves a grand total of 12 minutes to Union.

To get any significant time savings you could, I guess, run trains direct from KW with not stops in between....but has GO ever run a one car train before....cause you would just be bypassing the vast majority of the corridor's customers/riders with that sort of arrangement.
