Agreed, but definately not surprised, if only they'd leave politics out of it, but city council use logic, and not politics? Never! (I know that sounds horribly pessimistic, but from my friends on the inside, the vote was based more on getting Rob Ford angry, then having our cities best intentions at heart.

Oh come on, that's like saying someone killed themselves with cancer because their cells are the ones that turned cancerous! It was a 40-4 vote. When you know you aren't going to get the vote why go through the process and waste time and money?
 
Because he's Ford. He's been the lone vote on issues in the past, and he's not averse to wasting time or money when it suits his purposes. It was a strange and unusual reversal for him (possibly in the hopes of deflecting attention away from a video he knew was about to surface?)

Any questions? Besides, it's ultimately a question for council, not Ford to decide unilaterally. Formality in government is important.

Also, procedurally, a NO vote buries the issue and forces 2/3 vote for revival. A mere postponement does not achieve that.
 
I have to agree with Mayor Ford and city council, if the Province isn't going to give the city a significant part of the proceeds from the casino, they can go to hell. This city deserves a sizable portion of the proceeds from the casino if they're going to host it.

The Province played hardball and tried to turn everyone against the mayor in an attempt to get the casino through without giving the city it's due share and it backfired. I'm sure Oxford will come up with something great for this site, but probably not of the same scale.

Does it deserve a bigger portion than other Ontario casino cities get? That was the issue: Ford was asking for a special deal, one better than existing cities get.

No, Toronto does not deserve a bigger portion than other municipalities, but if you ask me the formula they use for determining who gets what is crap. As far as I'm concerned all municipalities should get an even split of the proceeds for any casino hosted within their municipal boundaries.
 
Best potential project in the city...gone. Good ol' city council. Toronto is clearly not ready to grow to the next level of "World-Class" cities.
