This would truly be a project that would turn heads in any world class city. Hope they do it right. The renders are amazing!

Hopefully Con's like FanExpo and such will still be able to afford to stage their events at this location.

The usage of so much glass is incredible and would certainly brighten the dreary Front Street entrances. Now if we can only get Planet Hollywood to come back.. ;)
 
Even with mullions and smaller panes, Foster can still manage to make some brilliant curvature. Maybe they won't be massive, but they will be gorgeous.

these renders released today completely changed how I viewed this project! although I'm still not 100% sold on the twin towers, everything else looks spectacular. (perhaps the twins might look better if different heights or spaced apart a bit more, or adding skybridges or something). I actually think there is room for 1 more tower in between the twins and the Casino towers (of shorter height, to fill in the gap)

It does look great, but I remember the original proposal approved for the ROM. The "crystal" was envisioned and sold a glass "crystal". I could see a similar switcheroo happening here.
 
Can somebody give me an estimated timeline for this project? When should it get approved by City Council?

That image is of Fort Erie (expected to close). Woodbine is one of the best tracks in north America and has the best turf course in North America. Was home to the breeders cup some time ago and is included in the list of tracks being considered as part of set yearly rotation for the breeders cup (slots may make that impossible).
 
There's no guarantee that this project will be approved. Hypothetically speaking, if Council agrees to host a casino, and at this location, you're probably looking at 12 months minimum before it goes to Council for approval from when the City receives complete rezoning, OPA, and Site Plan Approval applications. Then there is always the possibility of the applications going to the OMB, which may take several more months before a settlement/decision is reached. Of course, what gets approved may also be substantially different than what we're seeing right now. My guess, fall 2014 before something gets approved. Then there's the building permit process, and with a complex project such as this, it may take quite a bit of time before a shovel hits the ground.
 
I would imagin this project will take a very long time, even if its approved. And what a huge demo to do aswell. Years just for that. The area will be a mess for a long time to.
 
With regard to this note in the report - where is it going to go?

The plan also takes all bus, truck, and taxi traffic down to a new below grade road, and relieves the queuing pressure presently on both Bremner and Front Streets. This enables better pedestrian and vehicle flow.

The plan includes five access points on Simcoe, Front Street, Blue Jays Way, Bremner and potentially Lakeshore, all of which will significantly improve traffic flow.

I'm guessing the convention centre will still be open for at least another year, early demolition perhaps starting at earliest fall 2014? give demolition the better part of the year, hits street level summer 2016, exterior construction finishes 2019? but that's at earliest.
The entire project (including Casino) I'd say be done by 2020 at the earliest. but i'm no expert
 
I was dead set against a casino at this location before but actually walking around the area and the convention centre itself convinced me that there are synergies and in particular tourism synergies that make it a highly compelling business case (cityplace brothels aside). This area is already tourist la la land half of the year with existing and growing tourist trap synergies so the argument for mix use sustainable neighbourhoods for families that Adam Vaughn is looking to create here can only be done by actively supressing business activity.

So ultimately the decision is do we want to supress tourist la la land business or supress it and champion a mixed use neigbhourhood against the headwinds of the market? Adam Vaughn is clear in wanting to supress business towards this aim, while others want to harness the headwinds and generate even more business opportunity now. I'm not suggesting either is a better argument than the other but personally I did not have a problem with clubland and I don't have a problem with this proposal.

Something of that magnitude you're probably "right on the money"..lol,
they would most likely throw together a temporary one somewhere else in the city for the time being.
